Event Description

On January 5, 2011,the St. Louis Branch of the National League of American Pen Women will hold an open meeting from 6:30pm to 9:00pm in Barnes & Noble Bookstore's meeting room at 9618 Watson Road, Crestwood, MO, (314) 843-9480.

Elaine Sandra Abramson, the president of the Missouri State Association of the National League of American Pen Women will give a presentation on the road to publishing. Her book"Thursday's Child", which is published by Echelon Press, contains 43 factional short stories based on episodes of her life. The publication of "Thursday's Child" is unique because the general rule in publishing is that an author only gets to publish a collection of short stories or material that is biographical or semi-biographical after that author has had numerous best selling novels on the market. She also created the cover art for "Thursday's Child."

Ms. Abramson has worked with Viacom Entertainment. Her artwork and children's stories have appeared in national publications and trade journals, Texas tourism, on licensed products, TV, and on the Internet. She is the first woman to become a state artist of Texas, and the founding editor of the Graphic Artists Guild's GAG Art Forum and the National League of American Pen Women's NLAPW Form., She also wrote for the Appraisers Association of America's The Appraiser.

Barnes & Noble’s store manager will also give a presentation on the Nook, B & N’s ebook reader. Publisher’s Weekly reports that ebooks are gaining in popularity while paperbacks and hard cover book sales are down. It’s time that authors embrace the publishing’sfuture and learn about ebooks and their readers.

Future presentations will include self publishing, short plays produced in St. Louis, and art as a profession.

NLAPW is the oldest and one of the most prestigious professional women artists, authors, and composers organizations in the nation. Begun in 1897, NLAPW's national headquarters are in the historic Robert Todd Lincoln house in Washington, DC. NLAPW offers its members the unique opportunity to stay at this historic house for a fee that is far lower than most DC hotels. NLAPW publishes "The Pen Woman", a quarterly national magazine, publishes a national membership directory, has national and local art and letters contests, and biannual conventions.

The St. Louis branch was established in April of 1926. It meets the first Wednesday of each month. For membership information contact Thelma Urich, President of the St. Louis Branch at (314) 752-5210.
