One of the latest and greatest additions to marketing your novel is the Book Trailer. These 30 second to 3 minute previews add unlimited value. Not only do you get to wet the pallet of your already interested readers, but you reach a whole new demographic. People who are on the go (with short attention spans) don't always take the time to pick up a book and read the back cover.
Book Trailers are your visual synopsis for our new attention-challenged society.

The ways you can utilize the trailer are endless. You can pair it with online marketing campaigns, air it via traditional media (T.V., Cable, Local Theaters), or use it to pitch your novel as a movie or television series property. Want more people to stop by your signing table at the bookstore? Throw your trailer up on an iPad and crank the volume! The marketing potential is endless.

When producing your Book Trailer there are a few very important things to keep in mind. This visual aid is a creative and quality representation of your book. If it looks cheap and slapped together, people will assume you put the same effort into writing your story. Make it movie quality. People love watching great movie trailers and being the first to share a hidden gem with friends. Produce a trailer that people want to share. Sharing is also directly related to social media and internet trends. This means your trailer should always be made with relevant search tags in mind. Search engines are the new library index cards. Use them to your advantage. Always think about your book from the reader's point of view. Sometimes authors can be too close to their own story for advertising purposes. They already know all of the connections between complex characters and elaborate plot points, so they forget to share them outside of their mind's eye. That is why we write the scripts for our authors. Our process is longer than most because we read each book (often several times) and write a script for the trailer based on the scenes and story lines that impacted us as a reader.

My digital media company recently added Book Trailer production as a passion project for my mother and author, CN Bring. After watching her struggle with book marketing for a long time, it became a personal objective to create something effective and affordable for the indie author. “We asked friends and industry connections until we were blue in the face. We thought about what would grab our attention as people who eat, sleep and breathe online. A lot of companies were doing book trailers and we thought that was a really great idea. Unfortunately, they were just words floating over pictures. We said we should make book trailers like movie trailers! We became really excited about the idea and our clients can see that the passion grows with every production. Every author gets the “Mom” treatment.”

So I would love to hear more from authors on their book trailer experience so that we can continue to improve our process and product. Please share your thoughts!

Google has a very helpful service which can help you get more publicity. And the best part it’s FREE!
It's like a having an media clipping service which scrutinizes both the web and Google News database, then sends you an email as soon as something you're interested in appears in the search results.
For instance, let's say you're a big fan of “Glen Beck”. You can set up a Google Alert for

It's like a having an media clipping service which scrutinizes both the web and Google News database, then sends you an email as soon as something you're interested in appears in the search results.

For instance, let's say you're a big fan of “Glen Beck”. You can set up a Google Alert for
“Glen Beck”. Then whenever Google finds any mentioned in a top news story or on the web, you'll get an email including the web site address so you can go see where
and how “Glen Beck” is mentioned.

To set up your own Google Alerts for free, just go to http://www.google.com/alerts (read further down for using this service and its paid alternative).

The exciting thing is you can use this service to grow your business in all sorts of ways.

Some of the obvious ways to use it include setting up alerts to see what others are saying about you online, 'discover' what they saying about your competitors, find out about new developments in your field of expertise and/or discover some other prominents with whom you might want to ally yourself in some way.

This service is also one of the best publicity tools ever created and it's FREE! Here are three tips to use Google Alerts to get media exposure:

STRATEGY #1 –
Obtain IMMEDIATELY publicity by tying-in with breaking news stories.

One of the best and easiest ways to get FREE publicity is to be able to comment on what's already in the news. For instance, one of my clients, Gerry Robert, book writing coach, wealth expert and author of Millionaire Mindset.

One of the strategies we employ whenever an alert pops up having to deal Wealth, Book Writing, Economy somewhere in America or Canada, you need to contact newspapers and radio/TV shows in that city immediately and let them know you can comment on what’s happening.

Robert then asked, 'But how will I know when a related story hits the news?'

My answer: "Google Alerts."

The results will blow you away!

STRATEGY #2 –
Building friendships with media contact who discuss your topic.

Another of my clients, Patrick Snow, also uses Google Alerts service in a very systematic way to get publicity.

Here's what Patrick does: First he set up alerts to track stories written on his area of expertise, which is Success, Selling and Families.

When he gets an alert email pointing him to a good story on that subject, he then sends the journalist who wrote the story a short email saying he enjoyed article and offers a sincere compliment.

His email stands out because journalists don't often hear from their readers and when they do it's usually to complain. Within his email Patrick mentions his website CreateYourOwnDestiny.com to reinforce his credibility.

If the journalist writes him back and thanks him for his comments, Patrick then offers to send them a free copy of his book and mentions he's happy to be a resource for them on any future stories they might do on this or similar topics.

Patrick Snow has made the front cover of USA Today and multiple TV/Radio interviews.

STRATEGY #3
The Hook is more than Book

Authors are always asking me about a good 'hook' or angle should be when approaching the media. I'll immediately ask them, “What hooks have others used in your industry?”

Usually they don't know, but by using Google Alerts (or even just searching the Google News database at http://www.google.com/news) you can quickly find video clips, articles in which others with similar expertise are quoted.

For example, let's say you've written a book about Funding Commercial Businesses. Suppose also that you're based in Houston. One day you discover a story in the New York Times about new loan programs making it easier for self-employed people to get Commercial Businesses. Well, if it's newsworthy in New York, it's probably going to be considered newsworthy by the media in your city. So pitch your local media on doing the same story, only this time they'll be interviewing YOU as the expert.

Here are a few words of advice on implementing this strategy:

Use quotation marks to narrow your alerts, for instance, I have an alert set up for Bert Martinez and because I'm not the only person in the world with that name, I get a lot of off-target alerts. Every time Bert or Martinez pop up I received an alert by using "Bert Martinez" it allows be to receive more exact searches.

You Were Created to Succeed . . . .with Publicity.
I started this resource directory (Author & Book Promotion) last year to help not only authors but aspiring authors as well. The directory is comprised of articles, marketing tips, book reviewers, newspaper reviewers, awards, organizations for authors, etc. There is now a featured books section that was added to the website to provide authors with greater online book publicity. Unfortunately whether one likes it or not, FREE promotion will only take you so far.

-For aspiring authors or authors-to-be this give you a chance to get a jump start on your book marketing as a quick start could make quite a difference in your marketing.

-For established authors, Author-Promotion gives you another way to promote your books online. It also provides those authors with resources they may not necessarily be aware of. It may also help to guide authors who have struggled with marketing.

The site is promoted by both paid and free advertising.

I always receive many questions from authors about marketing. If you have any questions, please feel free to ask it here.
Marketing is the most important thing once you have your book in hand, and most authors are like me and can't afford a publicist to help get their book out there. Perhaps if we share some marketing that we've each done for our own books, it will give others ideas on how to do the same. I also can't buy the hundreds of books out on marketing as I live on disability and the little I do make with the books.
I also can't buy the hundreds of books out on marketing as I live on disability and the little I do make with the books.

Some of the things I've done so far. On my one book, The Choice Is YOurs and also DVD taped on TN death row with death row inmates talking to the kids about how they found themselves on death row and what it's like. They talk to the kids about gangs, drugs, alcohol, and committing crimes and they pull no punches or make any excuses. They were guilty and now they're facing their punishment, which is loss of life. www.thechoiceisyours.org

For this, I went on line and make a copy of all Christian schools in the us, then send each an email telling about the dvd and book. Of 8000 emails, I sold four DVD's. I'm now doing regular schools, in each state. Once that list is done I will send a flyer on it as well. I am also compiling a listing of emails for churches as most have youth groups that the dvd should be played.

I don't know what else to do with this one to get out there with this one.....I do send press releases to all the newspapers in the US on all books.

For my newest book my life story, A Mothers Torment, www.amotherstorment.com I have no clue who to contact as this would be something most anyone could relate to.

For my book on women who ride motorcycles, I took one state and sent all the motorcycle shops an email flyer on it and got a few orders, but not enough to really say it was a success. I'd also thought of contacting leather shops on it as everyone who rides wears leather and buys in shops.

Anyone else have marketing ideas on any books or what they've done to try and market their books.
