In the quietness of the night,
there by the lantern light reading philosophy.
Flashes of insight delight the soul,
when the lines reveal a new discovery.

You’re all alone in the hushed peace,
making up for lost time in a nocturnal retreat.
The crickets creak in their cracks at ease,
and the cold puppy snuggles for warmth at my feet.

You try writing a verse in brief,
but each word unveils the face
of a half hidden grief.
Outside the night in the shadows of a melody,
you feel the heaviness of a weighty sorrow.
As the dawn creeps into your mind.
The moon glows dimly in the near dark,
and you shudder to hear the little dog bark.

Lost in your book world of search,
the tortuous paths you walk to reach
into the roots and the past.
The roads that were slippery, thorny and narrow.
Fear of the unknown forces you to resist sleep,
afraid to remember yesterday or think of tomorrow.
