The Book Marketing Network

For book/ebook authors, publishers, & self-publishers

Publishers,

Who pays state sales tax when your books are sold or downloaded online?  I realize if we sell our books in our state we must collect and pay sales tax on those books.  But what about books sold on Amazon or Smashwords?  I've been trying to research this topic and am not finding much helpful information.  Does anyone have any experience with paying state sales tax on the books they publish?

From what I understand the applicable sales tax would or should be paid by the seller. Like the sellers on Amazon those making the sale would or should be paying any applicable sales tax in the state in which they are registered or located to do business. Like in my site if I sell anything through my site and personally deal with the customer I am responsible for paying the applicable sales tax on the items I sell.

Hope this helps.
