Women of The Round Table
review by Kristin Roedell

Phibby Venable has made a remarkable writing debut with her book Women of the Round Table. The book centers on a group of friends who meet regularly around a kitchen table. Nothing is as it appears, and none of these women are ordinary. Each of these characters shares a common ground which gradually becomes invested with greater meaning. This is a central theme throughout the story.

One could say that this book is about what Carl Jung called "synchronicity", or the theory that our experiences are linked by more than cause and effect. The women of the Round Table share connections that unfold and become richer as the book progresses. They find they are bound together by generations of birth, death, and the miraculous. In the book, a crystal has been handed down to a pair of sisters. It has power in it: each holder can make one wish.

The author allows the reader to guess whether it is this "magic" that enables these women to survive mountainous obstacles, or their simple courage and determination. Without betraying the ending, the culmination of the story is richly satisfying. This novel has soul, it has wit and humor, but more than that, it has wisdom. It is a catalyst for hope. Women of the Round Table is a story I hope my daughter will read. It will be a welcome gift to your own extraordinary women
