Hi, Look no further, if you are looking for quality proof-reading for free or for less. I am an author myself. Writing is what I do for living. I have been doing proof-reading for free for upcoming and seasoned authors. The only thing I ask in exchange is for the person to also proof-read one of works.
If you are interested in exchanging your writing for proof-reading, contact me at ceptey@yahoo.com

Chromhelm Garglehammer let out a furious roar and charged down the small hill toward the gateless entrance to the city. He didn’t realise it at the time but his eyes were closed. He half expected the guards at the gate to smack him in the back of the head with an axe, or the sentries on the towers to riddle him full of bolts before he got more than a few feet inside. But none of that happened. He began to swing his mighty battle-axe in a figure of eight, cutting down any enemy in his path, but there were none. He put his head down so as to butt his way through the ranks of soldiers protecting the King. He would use his sheer bulk to force a way through to his prize, but there were no lines of soldiers and there was no King. Chromhelm Garglehammer smashed head first into a wall and hit the ground, his tiny legs still running in the air.

After a few moments fighting nothingness with his fists he opened one eye. He was alone in one of the wide open spaces of the ruined city. Around him was scattered the remains of a large military camp, tents had been half struck, broken weapons lay in piles and food rotted in the sun, covered in hordes of horseflies.

“Where is everyone?” he said to himself risking a second open eye and getting up to his feet with some difficultly. Across Acerii there was an eerie silence punctuated only by the call of crows, Chromhelm lifted his heavy axe. “Have I won?” he said to himself.

“I doubt it,” came the voice of the God.

Chromhelm-Garglehammer spun on his heels and faced his axe toward the Apple-god, who stood more resplendent than before, just behind him.

“What trickery is this?” asked Chromhelm, his axe still raised.

“My apologies dear hero,” spoke the God like honey as he pushed Chromhelm’s axe away from his perfect face with his fingertips, “plans have altered, more advantageous opportunities have come to light.”

“So you mean to deceive me, I should have known better than to trust a God.” Chromhelm spat on the ground, a tiny shoot of an apple seed sprouted where his spittle landed.

“No deception was intended my beautiful hero, but in light of recent discoveries,” the God pointed his arm across the courtyard where several of Vortigern’s men were moving a large object covered in cow hides onto an equally large cart, “you and other plans have become redundant.”

“Re-dun-dant,” worded the Hero and he tried to grasp what was going on.

“The time of Heroes is over.”

“Oh,” said Chromhelm, his mind beginning to have some understanding of the word ‘redundant’.

“Farewell little hero, I have to travel with Vortigern to safeguard my own salvation from idleness, but I fear it is too late for the likes of you.”

The God walked away from the Hero and toward the men at the cart.

“But what will I do now?” asked Chromhelm, his axe falling to the ground with a disappointed clang.

“Find a girl, build a nice house and settle down,” the God called back. “Oh, and grow some apples, make some cider and get drunk. By the time the Gods have left this world there will be no one here to fight, Chromhelm Garglehammer, no one at all.”

Remember, most of your promotion will be online where people are bombarded with images and their attention spans are short. One study showed once a label or packaging design (which is really what a book cover is) catches a viewer's attention, the viewer will spend about 3 seconds (or less) looking at it before they do one of two things:

(1) they pick up the product (or click on its image) to learn more about it or...
(2) they move on to something else.

Humans are, by nature, extremely sensitive to first impressions. The corporate world has known this for a long time. That's why they spend tens of millions of dollars every year on market surveys and research to determine the effectiveness of their product packaging.

Two important things for authors to remember:

1. The cover is a potential reader's first impression of your book. There is an entire psychology built around the concept of "first impressions". That psychology should be understood by anyone whose product (a book, in this case) is just one among many in competition for the public's attention.

2. Think of the cover of your book in terms of "product packaging" in the same way that manufacturers regard the packaging of their products. The cover of your book is the "packaging", the "box" (metaphorically speaking) that contains the "product". The product is the story inside the "box". More often than not, a potential buyer's assumption about the quality of the product is determined by their perception of the quality of the packaging.

Make that "First Impression" count!

My fees are among the most competitive you're likely to find anywhere.

Stop by and have a look.

Thank you!

The Essential Art of the Book Indexer

by Robert Fulford

J.G. Ballard's book of short fiction, War Fever, contains a story consisting of nothing but a five-page index. It's all that remains of an autobiography written by a man who disappeared after being tried in secret for revolutionary activity. Though the authorities suppressed his book, the index somehow survived; we readers have to figure out his fate from the list of topics that was supposed to appear at the end of the book.

That curious little narrative falls into a genre that Jorge Luis Borges made his own: fragments of imaginary documents. The Ballard story could have been written only by someone who loves a good index for itself rather than merely as a guide to a book's contents. The nature of that peculiar love, and the pleasures it brings, are subjects of a delightful anthology from the University of Toronto Press, Indexers and Indexes in Fact & Fiction, edited by Hazel K. Bell.

Some indexes are so simple-minded they seem to have been generated by computers, but making a good index is an independent literary craft, practised by freelancers for more than a century. Bell, who has prepared indexes to some 600 books and journals, was the editor for many years of The Indexer, a trade journal, from which she's drawn many of the articles in her collection. She makes her subject both serious and funny. She knows how hard it is to produce a good index and she celebrates the understated comedy that results when an expert indexer meets first-class material.
