The Book Marketing Network

For book/ebook authors, publishers, & self-publishers

What specific thing have you done that has brought the most traffic/visitors to your web site? For example, do you write free articles and distribute them online? Do you take everyone’s name and email at book signings and follow up with them so they visit your web site? Were you interviewed or reviewed and lots of people came to the web site? (Was the interview online or in traditional media?)

Feel free to share your top 3, but we’d like as many people as possible to just spend a minute giving us at least the TOP reason people come to your web site / blog.

And don’t forget to give us the link so we can check it out!

Hi Lisa,

Guess I'll be first in line today. I have a number of visitors to my web-site by word of mouth, primarily. I am an electrician (day job) and make sure all the customers I visit on the job get a business card, and a letter from the desk of 'Valerie Anne Faulkner' (explaining the who-what- where's) stapled to the print out of the local newsprint article done about me and my book. I also carry a few books with me...to show and tell if someone’s interested, but no high pressure. Those same people usually get around to checking out the web and, quite often buy a book! I sign all copies...and mail out myself...and add the personal 'touch' however I can. I always try to get an email for future newsletters.

My husband and I organize 'book-signings' where ever and whenever we can...last one was at a farmer's market. I did remarkably well!

Last ...what seems to impress most potential buyers is the fact I've won an award for "I Must Be in Heaven, a promise kept", and I write a monthly column, on the Christian Fiction Online Magazine. I think for a first time author it is important to have ~some~ credentials. I've been trying all different avenues...but suppose these will help as a place to start.

Have a good one...And God bless,
Valerie :)

The top Three reasons why people come to my blog are:

1.) To check out my profile - Usually through referrals, viewers want to learn more about me and my promotional business.
2.) Give out FREE lists or tips - "Conquer All Obstacles" is designed to give and take nothing in return. I love to share the wealth of knowledge to my fellow writers.
3.) I promote like crazy - Networking--generating a following of viewers, I reach out and connect.

I look forward in reading other responses. Great topic of discussion...:).

I think the best thing I have done to bring traffic to the web site over the years is to write articles and put them out there for free. I use uniquearticlewizard.com to have more unique articles - it mixes up what you write to give different versions, and also keeps it from being duplicate content so Google doesn't penalize. i post them in about 20 different places online, plus they go out to directories. I've received a good bit of traffic when I feature articles on ideamarketers.com

I have many blogs I use as mini-websites for free through wordpress.com - it's easy to be able to let others post your content then on their own sites and have it all updated automatically. For example, we've had daily devotionals our writers team writes daily. For over 10 years they've been sent out via yahoogroups. We still use yahoogroups but now they are also at chronicillnessdevotionals.com (a blog) and people can get the widget and put the devotionals on their own web site. TIP: Have content people want to feature on their web site, ALLOW THEM to feature it, and make it all automatically updated through Widgets.

I also have a profile just about everywhere from social networks. I originally did it so I could always be found. Now I've gone back and updated profiles, etc. since social networks have become more popular. In the last month I've started using ping.fm so I can post "updates" to lots of places at one time and this has increased traffic from facebook, myspace, etc. to my web site.

I never liked MySpace (still don't) but the truth is we serve those with chronic illness and there are many people at this network who are into "causes" for their health. We have our annual outreach of Invisible Illness Week in Sept. In 2007 I put up an II Week web site over there at MySpace and in about 3 months over 8000 people came from MySpace to my web site (a Christian site) - that sold me on its value.

If you aren't computer marketing savvy, hire a teenager to build you a few fast web sites at different places like MySpace, Facebook, etc. so that when your topic is searched you have the weight of the larger networks behind you. (Your blog on Amazon will come up a lot hire in a search than your web site for example.) Put in your RSS feed for your blog at your Amazon Connect Author Profile. Do a Squidoo.com page (or a few). Make a video for YouTube. If you eed something fast and free use animoto.com to make a video you can post places.

Pretty soon people will begin to feel like you are "everywhere" and you will also be seen as the expert in your area.
The most effective method is cross listing. I list a web site on my page and they agree to list mine. This created a good spike in traffic when first initiated. Good directory listings are a must (so the search bits actually find your page). I
