The Red Letter Parables: Introducing Jesus as the Master Storyteller by Bob Palumbo reveals 40 stories told by Jesus, some well-known and some not so well-known, that present the Kingdom of God. These stories begin at the Wedding of Cana and continue on through the New Testament. Each story is unique, captivating, and announce a new beginning of a New Covenant with the life and ministry of Jesus. As a photographer would “zoom in” for a close up and “zoom out” for a panoramic view, the author zooms in and zooms out, to give deeper understanding of each teaching from each view. Focusing on the words in red, just as the red letter edition of the Bible, the author bunches some of the stories not normally considered parables contained in the books of Matthew and John to bring readers a fun and fascinating read through the parables of Jesus as Master Storyteller.

Within each parable, the author paints a picture that brings great understanding of what Jesus was saying in His parables. Jesus often spoke in parables, but also revealed to His Disciples the plain truths of what He was speaking. The author has done an excellent job in researching not only the historical and cultural aspects, but also includes keen interpretations based on various commentaries and Biblical wisdom on how these stories impact us just as much today as they did when Jesus graced this Earth.

With each story revealed, readers will see that Jesus is announcing the Kingdom of Heaven that is at hand, this new Kingdom is offered to the entire world as forgiveness and grace. Shedding light on some fresh insights, readers will also discover thought-provoking teachings that present scriptural truths in a practical way.  For instance, have you ever wondered what a Tare really is?  This book speaks to those common questions with ease and adds a little humor on the side. Bob Palumbo’s writing style is like talking to an old friend wrapped around witty phrases, comments and references to T.V. shows that we can all remember as kids!

Breaking the Silence by Diamante Lavendar is a touching fictional memoir written through a series of diary entries by the main character of the book, Joan Eastman. The character has bought the diary to journal her second pregnancy. Beginning with a poem written by the author, the poem sheds light on the beauty of the Lord’s keeping of you in your life and the fleeting temporal world that we live in, giving all hope for the future available in the Lord. Her book continues with fading in-and-out of memories and glimpses of the characters life, revealing horror of young innocence that was stolen and abused, Eastman’s memories of child abuse portray abuse that began at two-years-old and continued for many years. Encouraging all to not internalize abuse, the author speaks out to inspire others to break the cycle of silence that victims of abuse often endure in their suffering.

As the book transcends into the depths of child abuse and the wounding, the author reflects these journeys with life-lessons learned that reveal an overcoming spirit. She reveals how the Lord was there at every “winding road” that helps readers understand such issues as: anger, emotional and sexual abuse, the damage of stuffing emotions, self-esteem, hatred, perfectionism, self reflection, and so much more that offers readers hope and faith in God, offering a realization that with help from Him, they can overcome all abuse and neglect in their lives.

Throughout the book, many different seasons are revealed in the character’s life, displaying just how God carried the character through all the dark times. A restoration of hope and a personal relationship in the Lord  developed over the years in the character which sheds light on the fact that whether abused or not, all readers can relate to the different seasons of one’s life and look back upon their lives to see the hand of God active upon their life. This is the main theme of the book intertwined with breaking the silence of abuse that the author has creatively conveyed.

She also wants others to know that they are not alone. Encouraging all to look to God and that there is hope, healing and restoration in Jesus Christ. This book comes highly recommended for those that need help and encouragement in processing abuse, giving them a foundation in the Lord, and helps lead them into recovery by offering hope through Jesus Christ.

Inconvenient Adventures by Helen Cadd is a wonderful read, one that is written from the heart and from one who has lived a long life serving the Lord in many capacities. Through such, Helen has a very unique perspective that offers attitude adjustments for life, and the inconveniences and challenges we all face. Relating this to a life centered in Christ, these attitudes prove monumental in daily perceptions, as Helen Cadd looks back on her life story and inconvenient adventures.

Helen’s shares from a place of experience and much biblical wisdom. She speaks of her life with Dick, her husband of 58 years and the fun they had together. Her fond memories of their children, the Christmas memories and even childhood memories bring the book to life and makes for a very interesting read. Her life adventures are a testimony to God, family and love, as they lived out many of the Commandments of the Lord (one in particular was to remember the poor).

As the author states, “This is not a book of ‘Do, Don’t and How To.’  It is simply stories in my life of adventures and the results of an attitude change.”  Noting that the first key to “opening your life adventures” is a change of attitude. She assures to readers that all is possible with the Lord.

In My Mind: A Faith Journey Through Rough Seas by Paul G. Tremewan is a touching collection of poems, short stories of his teaching experiences and prayers that he wrote from his sickbed, as he suffered the devastating effects of terminal ALS. ALS is called Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis also as “Lou Gehrig’s Disease” – a progressive degenerative diseases affecting the nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord.

Written from a place of weakness during the last two years of his life, Paul G. Tremewan reflects on life, and gives readers hope and insight through his many prayers, poems and his good sense of humor. . .

.

Readers will get to know Paul through testimony from his son, but mostly from his writings. Consumed with ALS, all he could do was write – and write he did! The prayers are deeply moving – there will be something each reader will take away from the prayers, as he struggles to cope with his disease, never giving up. His encouraging demeanor comes through in his humorous reflection on his many years as a teacher in a junior high school. Some of his stories give insight into his caring compassionate side, as he protected and invested in students that came his way.

.

Inspiring, this book helps others to count their blessings in life and to be thankful. Coming from a dying man, all would be wise to heed his advice, which was to focus on the present, and that is all we can do. We don’t know the future and the past is gone. Inevitably readers will be touched in small and big ways through his openness, genuineness, caring and fun-loving personality. Those who are suffering will find solace, as the reader directs them to look up to a God, our Father.

His dream that he had in his last week on Earth was especially impactful, as Jesus, reassured the author that he would be taken care of. Reading this book is a blessing and inspires all to never give up, knowing that we all are in God’s good hands despite our circumstances.

.

*Additionally, his widow’s “Epilogue” encourages all to look how to be a blessing to others. Truly, a great word to live by!
