BEING YOUR OWN PUBLISHER

Yeah, yeah, there's new tech parameters and a paradigm shift and all that.

But the important thing is that there are (and always have been) alternatives to writing something then trying to sell the rights to a publishing company. This group is to explore these areas of self-owned publishing biz.

Some writers have niche books, some have special needs (like texts for their seminars), some are just too entrepreneurial to sell of their own inspirations. And some just want to see something in print.

There is a spectrum these days, from big publishers through the new, small POD publishers, to using publishing services like lulu.com or iuniverse, to printing yourself and selling online, to release of downloadable mp3 "podcasts" or pdf manuals.

If you have expertise, experience, or questions in this area, don't be shy about posting them here. It's a rapidly expanding field and nobody knows everything about it, but lots of us are learning enough to do what we want to do and successfully get it across the counter.

I have been promoting my Christian books and publishing services through Ad Surf Daily as an marketing experiment for about a month now. It is an ad surfing co-op enterprise. I have generated 1200 visits to my sites and obtained one solid prospect contact (for publishing services). I started with a free membership which allows you to promote one web site for 10 days. I then bought $50 in ad packages, which qualifies you to promote 3 web sites (or one site three times as much). In one month's time I have received $15.61 cash back in rebates on that $50 ad purchase and will continue to receive rebates until I get 125% of my purchase price back (looks like that will take 3-4 months). By that time I will have generated 4-5 thousand hits to my sites and have my ad money back (plus 25%). I would be interested to know if anyone else is promoting books or publishing through ASD or any other such system. If you want to experiment with it, you can go to http://72.32.185.200:8080/?ref=17573.

I have six books all POD published. I'm thankful that modern technology has provided an alternative to traditional publishing. If not, I probably would still be receiving rejection letters for my books.

The bottom line for anyone whether self-published, POD published, Vanity Press, or traditional publishing is the marketing, promoting, and selling of your book(s). I've discovered that my books have sold very well but it's been because of my efforts in that area.

Again, I'd like to remind people of a new, but valuable resource: the forums at < A HREF="http://www.selfpublishersplace.com">Self Publishers Place

You can list a link to your book, and poke around the forum for some good tips on various aspects of self-publishing and promotion.

Hi Lynda
About Widgets. Get hold of Fraser, a very nice guy and member of this group. He can show you all about it. They are a very powerful sales and promo tool if you use them.

Hello everyone! It's good to see some great comments regarding iUniverse. I am publishing my first book, Afterthoughts, now through them. It's due to be released in September, so far I have been very impressed. If you would like to know more, please visit my website at www.lynntincher.com. I am looking forward to getting to know you all as well. Congratulations to everyone on the board on your accomplishments so far. Just to get to the point of being able to publish is a great accomplishment. To believe enough in yourself, yet another. Kuddos to everyone and good luck.

Hello all,

I'm with Lynda, what is a widget? Is there anyone out there that can answer this question for us?

As for converting a book to an e-book, amazon does it and calls it a kindle book. Not sure if that is the same thing, but apparently you can do it online.
