BEING YOUR OWN PUBLISHER

Yeah, yeah, there's new tech parameters and a paradigm shift and all that.

But the important thing is that there are (and always have been) alternatives to writing something then trying to sell the rights to a publishing company. This group is to explore these areas of self-owned publishing biz.

Some writers have niche books, some have special needs (like texts for their seminars), some are just too entrepreneurial to sell of their own inspirations. And some just want to see something in print.

There is a spectrum these days, from big publishers through the new, small POD publishers, to using publishing services like lulu.com or iuniverse, to printing yourself and selling online, to release of downloadable mp3 "podcasts" or pdf manuals.

If you have expertise, experience, or questions in this area, don't be shy about posting them here. It's a rapidly expanding field and nobody knows everything about it, but lots of us are learning enough to do what we want to do and successfully get it across the counter.

For those authors looking for an economical and respected venue to self-publish, check out Amazon's DTP platform for publishing to their Kindle e-book reading device, as well as their CreateSpace division for self-publishing printed books. Both their DTP platform and CreateSpace are FREE to authors who want to publish using their platform(s). In addition to the FREE publishing, author-publishers are able to set their own retail list price, earning 35% of this price in royalties. Even if Amazon chooses to discount your work before listing it, you will receive 35% royalty on the list price you set.

If you don't Kindle, you should. Not only will it make your reading experience infinitely better, it will help you familiarize yourself with the platform to which you may eventually publish to. I have an article coming out soon which compares the K2 to the DX (older v newer), as well as giving preliminary tips to authors considering this platform as their publishing platform. Don't sleep on the e-book reader revolution. It may not transform the traditional publishing industry completely, but statistics show that it is, and will remain, a major player in how author's content is delivered to readers.

Please accept my apologies if someone has already provided this information. I have not read through all of the 152 responses that were posted ahead of mine.

My strategy is to be on as many 'sites' as possible. Some are Facebook, Twitter, Yahoo, Blogger, Blip.fm etcetera. The more exposure and name recognition one gets ,the better.

None of our authors have to do anything - WE do it. I think the publisher that got the pay should do the work! I can't make B&N do anything of course, and they are MASTERS at "one way" communication! Publishing is a whole different world, but it's worth it in the long-run!

When we set-up a book through our distributo (Ingram) we ONLY do it once, other sites subscribe to that "feed" for lack of a better term. We have 4,000 characcters that we can use for the description of the book - I "Googled" my book "Me and Delmer Green" and found it on sites as far away as India. All with one set-up! It's also a candidate for the new "EBM" offerings (Espresso Book Machine) being made available this summer!

OOPS! I meant "RUINING"

How many books have we ALL read that really didn't "take off" until the 5th chapter? I think the Amazon "search inside the book" gives the potential buyer enough of a "taste" without reuining the experience for the author too. Seeing the writing style and reading a few samples should be MORE than enough!
