- I served in the U.S. Navy in WWII and with the U.S. Marines in the Korean War. Former owner of the Royal Room night club in Hollywood California and Xenios restaurant in San Francisco.
My Nine Lives is a colorful life story- a survivor of the second Pearl Harbor disaster, five hurricans, three earthquakes, two typhoons, two floods, four serious accidents and many other mishaps. Encounters with gansters and other escapades that arose during my forty-seven moves around the world. Many thrilling stories and adventures in the Phillippines, Guam, Saipan, Hong Hong, Washington D.C., Italy, Puerto Rico and Cuba. In addition, all of Europe and the Pacific. I knew deposed King Farouk of Egypt, King Hussein of Morocco, Archbishop Markarios of Cyprus and General Moshe Dyan of Israel.
My closest friends include Frank Sinatra, Louis Armstrong, Milton Berle, George Raft and Harry Guardino. I also write about Sammy Davis Jr. Richard Burton, Rita hayworth, Humphrey Bogart, E.G. Marshall, Omar Sharif, the Kennedy family and many mobsters like Mickey Cohen, Jack Dragna and the DeSica brothers. I guess I had more lives than a cat.
The highlight of my life happened early in 2005
It started one day when a local reporter, Don Moore reporter for the Sun Herald wrote a srory about my life. My phone starting ringing off the hook People started telling me that I should write a book so I decided to write my autobiography. About six months after my book was published I received an e-mail
from a man in California named Dean DePhillipo. He wanted a copy of my book.
Afew months passed and then I got a bombshell. That stated that he was my 47 year old son! Dean is a nature photographer and a faculty member at Brooks Institute of Photography in Santa Barbara, California. He knew he was adopted. When his parents passed away he wanted to find his natural parents. My name came up when he was going through the adoption records. I was listed as the father on his birth certificate! His mother never told me about my son. Her name was Barbara Shipley. We met back when I ran the Royal Room on Hollywood Blvd. She was one of my waitresses. Dean looked me up on the Google internet and found my book for sale. In my book, there is a picture of Barbara, along with enough information about her to make Dean certain he found his father. We agreed to DNA testing. I received the big news on my 81st birthday when Dean told me I would have to add a new chapter to my book.. I was a poppa again to a 47 year old son.
We had a great reunion in January 2007 when he arrived at the Fort Myers airport. It was televsied by Holly Wagner TV reporter for CBS Wink TV who incidently received an Emmy for my story. Dean and his seven year old daughter will spend our first Christmas together. I have forty- seven gifts for him and seven for my granddaughter to make up for the lost years. - Website:
