- Kevin C. Mills has been an award-winning journalist for over 20 years. During his career he has written for the Lewiston Sun Journal, The Boston Globe, The Portland Press Herald and the Lynn Daily Evening Item, as well as freelancing for various newspapers and magazines.
He has been recognized multiple times by the Maine Press Association as well as the New England Press Association, the Maine Association of Basketball Coaches and the Maine Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association.
In addition to his work as a journalist, he published a novel, Sons and Daughters of the Ocean in October 2010. He followed that with a nonfiction work called Sidelined, based on his career as a sports journalist.
Sons and Daughters of the Ocean is based loosely on the maritime history of various ancestors. The characters are rooted in true life experiences from the age of sail and portray an accurate account of life many generations ago. It is about three teens growing up in small Maine coastal village in which all lives are impacted by the fortunes of the sea.
Sidelined looks at journalism in a unique way. Reliving his own experiences with some of New England’s top newspapers, Mills presents strange but true episodes from his own career. He chronicles some of his favorite incidents with humor and wit while presenting the finished product, which barely hint at the story behind its publication.
He chases hockey legend Wayne Gretzky down the hall of the FleetCenter or shows up at Major League shortstop Mike Bordick’s doorstep. Relive the stop the presses moment that he missed when Mike Tyson was knocked out by Buster Douglass. Learn the back-story to some of Mills’ greatest features and laugh along as Mills endures faulty stadium lights and gates that lock him inside the football stadium. Mills graduated from Gorham High School , in Gorham, Maine and Gordon College, in Wenham, Mass.
While in college, he covered high school sports for the Boston Globe, was the sailing writer for the Lynn Daily Evening Item and covered local sports for the Portland Press Herald.
In 1992, he began working for the Lewiston Sun Journal. In addition to being the regular beat writer for the Portland Pirates for 10 years, he has also been responsible for the paper’s award-winning coverage of women’s sports, including soccer, basketball and softball.
While at the Sun Journal he has been recognized by the Maine Press Association seven times in eight years including the Weekend Sports Feature of the Year in 1993, 2001 and 2002 and the Daily Sports Feature of the Year in 2007.
The New England Press Association recognized his work in the Sports Feature category in 2001.
Mills is a descendant of lighthouse keepers, shipbuilders and merchant mariners. Two of his ancestors, poetess Celia Thaxter and maritime author George S. Wasson, are integral parts of Maine’s early literary heritage. - Website:
