Profile Information

Something About Me and My Book:: Born severely deaf, I was raised in Norfolk, VA, and now work as a job coach for people with disabilities in the same area and other surrounding cities. I just self-published "All Eyes", a memoir of deafness which tells about my life growing up in both the deaf and the hearing world. I first attended Clarke School for the Deaf in Northampton, MA, where I learned to speak and struggled with language development. It was typical for a deaf child to cope with delayed English language in the 1960s and 1970s. After seven years at Clarke, I began to face difficulties in regular school but eventually overcame obstacles in the hearing world, at times with humor. This book also relates the importance of my lifelong friendships with two girls Cheryl and Diane I met at Clarke, and how the different paths that they took influenced me as an adult.

Amazon Removing Book Reviews

I just noticed that Amazon has deleted all of the professional book reviews from my book page this morning and am extremely upset because those reviews could help the sales. I hear from book marketing sites that many other authors have been affected with no specific explanation from Amazon. I certainly hope the reviews, most of them paid, will be restored. I would appreciate your thoughts/suggestions on this. Thank you, Bainy

Need your opinions about the LA Book Festival!

Have any of you been to the LA Book Festival? I'm thinking about going there for my book signing - all the way from VA. Will it be worth it??? I'd much appreciate your feedback!

Book Reviews

I would love to have some reviews for my memoir "All Eyes" so do you know of any independent reviewers who would post on Amazon and other websites? I'd be glad to pay a fee as long as it is not over $75. Free is even better! And have you used Kirkus Reviews? Someone suggested it but it costs more than a Trek bicycle. Is Kirkus worth it? I'd appreciate your thoughts/suggestions on getting a book review. Thanks!

In response to your questions on book reviews, check with your publisher as most publishers say not to pay for book reviews, especailly if the pubisher is large enough to send the book out for professional reviews. I do pre-released book reviews for readertoreader and the NewYork Journal of Books-but don't get paid yet. Anyone who has read your book can post a review on Amazon. There are reviewers posting on almost all the sites-check out Cold Coffee Cafe, iFOGO, and any others you know and you'll see them there. I think what Kirkus charges is outrageous. Library Joural is supposed to be good but most libraries want your pfd galley of your book before publishing and won't accept it afterwards--something I found out too late. I got my best reviews from newspapers in towns I lived in throughout my life and they are free--also have a large readership. BTW, I had a memoir publised too--small press. You need a few good reviews from places like that and magazines as most independant reviewers are like me--writers who enjoy reviewing books. That said, if you can't find anyone and can send me your book and aren't in a huge hurry, I can alwaqys review your book with my qualifications as author, journalist and magazine writer. Good Luck!!
