In 1969 Municipal Judge Robert Steele of Euclid, Ohio conspired with a pimp to hire a hit man to murder his wife. For eight years Carol J. Kilbane-Byler was engulfed in this dark, tempestuous conspiracy. She knew the details of the murder and was labeled a “central figure” in the murder trial. Torn between keeping this buried secret or revealing the truth about her common-law husband’s involvement plotting the murder, when called by the prosecutor to testify against the men on trial, she refused. Charged with contempt of court and immediately removed from the courtroom she spent six months in jail. Following her release, she remained terrified fearing for her life.
With her secret knowledge of the murder Carol was unable to see any way out of the web entangling her. Using the journal she kept throughout this terrifying period of her life, she recounts in vivid detail, the highs and lows of her journey out of her unhealthy, abusive relationship into an entirely different life filled with authentic love, joy and acceptance.
This account of Carol’s transformation has inspired people for more than 30 years. Just released by Gazelle Press, her true story is told in detail in her book, Secret Witness ( The Steele Murder Case )
