Something About Me and My Book:
My Name is Bertha:
Author Fran Lewis
Illustrated by: Jamie Miller

I am Fran Lewis the author of My Name is Bertha and now Bertha Speaks Out. Before writing these short stories I was a New York City Teacher for over 30 years. I taught grades one through six and later as well as becoming the Reading and Writing Staff Developer for my school. Teaching children to read is really very rewarding and introducing them to writing and creating their own stories was exciting for the students and me as well.
Growing up can be really difficult when you are over weight or not really good at sports or dancing. I hope you will learn by reading my stories that you can be anything that you want to be and no one can stop you from reaching your goals and dreams. Not everyone is born athletic, beautiful, thin and a genius. But, every one of you is smart or excellent in something whether it is drawing, jump rope or even running track, it does not matter. Who you are makes you special. I hope that you enjoy reading about Bertha and Tillie and learn that there is a little bit of Bertha in everyone.
Love, Bertha and Fran Lewis

Author’s Bio: Bertha Speaks Out

Written by: Fran Lewis

Illustrated by: Jamie Miller

My Name is Bertha is soon to be followed by this new book called Bertha Speaks Out. I spent my whole life living in the Bronx. I grew up on Southern Boulevard and Tremont Avenue. I went to P.S. 67 on Mohegan Avenue and to JHS 44 on Prospect Avenue. I really loved both of these schools and for the most part the teachers were great. In this book you will learn how one teacher in my JHS really helped me to find my inner voice and let it out in order to speak freely. Throughout my years in elementary school and the start of JHS I was always taught to remain silent and not speak out for fear of being disrespectful. I soon learned that adults can be mean and disrespectful to children for some reason often got away with it. As an educator I learned that in order to teach children respect and proper behavior you had to give them the respect and love they deserved. I learned to listen to them when they wanted to express themselves even if we disagreed. I learned to discipline without humiliating them. I gave them the right to speak in order to help them grow into the young adults and adults they are today. I am so proud of all of them and what I know many of them have accomplished.

Summary for Bertha Speaks Out

Growing up was difficult for me being overweight, too quiet and really afraid to speak out in order to defend myself. In this book Bertha learns that she needs to let her voice be heard and no longer allows herself to be the scapegoat. Not everyone is beautiful, looks like a model or even dances like the pros, but everyone in the world every child and adult is good at something. Find out what your strengths are and build on them and success will be yours.

Bertha also learns in this book how to deal with a family member’s disease and how she and her sister Tillie work together to help the other members of her family when grandma gets Alzheimer’s.

I hope that you enjoy reading about Bertha and Tillie and learn that there is a little bit of her in everyone.

Love
Bertha, Tillie and Fran Lewis

Chasing the Red Car

Author: Ellen Ruderman

Who would want to leave the Bronx? Certainly not Kim Lebow whose parents have decided to uproot the entire family to California. While sitting on the stoop of her apartment on Bolton Avenue she tried to convince herself and her friends that this trip was just a short three-month vacation. But, Kim and her sister, Jonna, knew better. Jonna was truly upset and when she voiced her opinion to her mother, she was…

FIVE PERFECT SMILES

Smile author Raina Telgemeier

Everyone loves a perfect smile with great white teeth that sparkle and shine. No child wants to walk around with metal in their mouth, braces and feel like they are wired for sound. But, when Raina Telegemeier slips and falls that beautiful smile of hers disappears and what’s left in its place is two empty spaces. Bad enough she injured two front teeth but the end result will be every young sixth grader’s nightmare and many adults too as…

Murder One: Author Robert Dugoni

Rebecca Han stood in front of Judge Myron Koslowski and received an oral reprimand in front of an entire courtroom. Preparing her case against a man noted for drug trafficking she hoped to be able to present evidence to lock him away for along time. What she did not expect is getting you might say blindsided by the legal system, red tape and judge who was unyielding. By the time all was said and done in the courtroom Rebecca Han knew…

Hi Fran,

Congratulations on your books, My Name is Bertha and now Bertha Speaks Out. I just wanted to mention to you a website I built called AlreadyPublished.com. It's for authors to promote their book. You do so by posting your book's first chapter, giving readers a peek into your book. The site is free and the list of books is growing, so please check it out. :) BTW, good luck with your books!

p.s. You can also check out this blog post on the Already Published Ning Network, I explain how to post your book. You can also learn more about the website there.

Best,
John

Hi Fran,

I had nothing to do with getting the book released. Mythica, as the publisher, deals with all that. Being a traditional publisher they see to everything and I don't have to do a thing. It is difficult tracking your sales if you're not with a trad publisher. Were your books self-published?

I'm really excited about hte release of this one and will be blogging most of the day to announce its appearance. I haven't got your address yet. Did you send it to me at my normal email address or the Mythica one. I don't get to the Mythica mailbox every day so I'd better go check.

Hope to hear from you later.

Best regards

Brian

Hi Fran,

I'd be honored to have a dedication page in your excellent and very worthwhile project. Would you like a simple dedication in memory of my Mother, who died in 2004, perhaps with the poem I wrote in her memory? Would that do?

As for my autograph for your copies of my books, I'd be happy to send you a couple of signature strips that can be pasted into the front of the books. I'll just need your mailing address.

Hope you have a wonderful day. My best wishes to you and your Mom.

Brian
