A quest to race around the world solo led me to the secret French training camp based out of La Trinite Sur Mer on the rugged west coast of France. The Mini-Transat class was founded by an Englishman in 1977 as a protest to the extreme budget required to participate in the OSTAR trans-Atlantic race. The boats could be no longer than 21 feet. This would limit the budget to allow all sailors to race on a more equal playing field. The Mini-Transat race has been held every other year since but in 1985, the French took over the organization and the participants were almost exclusively French. In the early 1980's, Isabelle Autissier took 3rd place in the Mini-Transat race before continuing on to become one of the most famous sailors in the world for her participation in the BOC (British Observers Challenge) solo race around the world. In 2001, I became the first American in over 20 years to complete the Mini-Transat race after barely making the cut off for one of the 25 allocated slots in the prototype class of the oversubscribed race.

Gale.... The site is going through a transition period and I appreciate your comments. For years we have been pretty much a regional resource for the local authors and about a year ago decided to reach out a bit more. Probably the biggest difference between us and "them" is that we strive to be more personal in our approach and relationship with the author. When the time comes, give me a call and we can discuss what we can do for you.
