Something About Me and My Book:
Throughout my life I have been surrounded by creative artist that have influenced my life and the many creative paths I would take to support myself; Advertising production, restaurant design, lifetime artist and now author.

My publisher review team wrote:

A humorous heartwarming memoir of a child artist growing up in
the heart of 1940s south central Los Angeles.

Award winning artist Gil Garcia set his paintbrush aside five years ago to write. In his joyful debut, A Walk Back Home he paints a humorous picture of life as it was in the 1940s and 50s.

“Meet the family who, over the course of forty-four charming short stories, will warm your heart, and leave you laughing out loud! Through these delightful vignettes, the author reminisces about his eccentric childhood in the 1940s Los Angeles home he shared with his parents, four siblings and a English sheep dog.”

“From the titillating joy of discovering girls to the devastating effects of the polio virus, this earnest collection provides a glimpse into a time when the exuberance of youth seemed able to overcome anything, and a ride in the rumble seat of Pop’s Model A Ford was a boyhood dream.”

“Follow along as Gil poignantly recounts the day of his own birth, a day that would usher in an unspeakable tragedy even in the face of overwhelming joy. Feel the unbreakable bond of family, even as an exasperated mother lays down a ultimatum that she’ll later hilariously regret.”

With Gil’s artistic imagination he paints in masterful descriptive detail the ups and downs of life in a neighborhood made up of immigrants who had migrated to the west coast to fulfill the employment needs of the war materials manufacturers. So descriptively beautiful are his words… if put to canvas they would rival a Norman Rockwell painting.

“What a gift Gil has created not only for his family-but for the rest of us and for generation to come. You will enjoy every story and every description he wrote with such vivid details and heartfelt warmth, emotion and humor. He offers the reader not only a personal glimpse into his family history but also a wonderful and lively panorama of an entire generation. He has created a priceless homage to his parents and, for the rest of us, a wonderful story that we will not soon forget!”

Gil Garcia was a reporter for the Stars and Stripes newspaper while in the military before spending two years in national advertising, and twenty-five years as a restaurant designer. He retired to his art in 1998, and over the years he has won numerous honors, such as being elected to be the official portrait artist for the 2002/2003 Western Conference Champions Sacramento Kings Basketball team as well as his art being chosen to hang in the California State fair.
