Profile Information

Something About Me and My Book:
I was born at an early age in Niagara Falls, not exactly in the waterfall but, like most baby boomers of my time, in a hospital—Niagara General to be precise. I was born very near my mother, if memory serves me correctly.

I wasn’t a writer then, preferring to eat and grow, but the love of books was fostered by my parents, who read to me from an early age. Likewise a love of nature was inculcated early and continuously throughout childhood through summer camps and through family hikes and camping trips that carried the family from Prince Edward Island to the Rocky Mountains.

The following is pasted in and is obviously not in the first person.:

John Haines is living the simple life he sought, as he describes in his book, In Search of Simplicity: A True Story that Changes Lives. He is currently writing a sequel to the aforementioned book, another book on natural health and he's creating an anthology of sound workers. John Haines’ popular weekly radio program, Voices from the North, simultaneously carried on radio and cable TV, involves one hour interviews with people from all walks of life. John’s intention on the program is to inform, educate,
entertain and inspire the public.

He teaches nutrition at a community college and helps coordinate a Complementary Therapies program at the same college. He offers workshops (he calls them Playshops) in yoga, voice, sound and expression for the Far North community and beyond. Together with his lovely wife Lucia, John coordinates the home schooling of their two teenage daughters. He writes on demand for local newspapers, relieves when needed in the public library, and grows healthy and abundant organic fruits and vegetables for his family. John is a singer/songwriter who has recorded three peace songs while living in the Netherlands.

His life is full but not overfull. There is time for daily walks on the beach, yoga, meditation and swimming in season. John is a happy and healthy man.

Earlier in life he lived a self sufficient permaculture-based lifestyle in New Mexico where he and his wife supplied organic vegetables to a restaurant in Santa Fe and he experimented with solar power and built and used biological waste water ponds and simple solar devices such as a solar cooker, solar water distiller and solar food dryer. He converted a seven hectare subtropical fruit orchard to organics at the top of New Zealand’s South Island and he and his wife developed and ran a Natural Health Retreat Centre in New Zealand’s Far North. He learned to speak Dutch during two family stays in the Netherlands, where he worked in a biodynamic orchard, led playshops and tried his hand at an extended variety of occupations.

Earlier still he served in a series of management and advisory capacities with Bell Canada and Bell Canada International.

He holds a Bachelor of Commerce Degree from McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario and an MBA from York University in Toronto, Ontario.

It's All Worthwhile

I received a response by Liza yesterday to a post I’d made on Dreams of Artists (on www.gaia.com) months ago. It was a post about creating a web presence and all the effort required. I for one sometimes wonder if all that effort is worthwhile. But…I then received an email from someone I’ve never met out of the blue this morning and, frankly, this one note makes it all worthwhile. I’d like to share it with you below.

Dear John,

On Friday . . .being the 21st August, I was in… Continue

You Say I'm a Dreamer

Kia ora,

I like the idea that we are all multicultural. I have felt for a long time that I am multicultural and multidimensional. I am a man, a son, a brother, a husband, and a father. I am a gardener, a walker, a swimmer and a talker. I am a songwriter, a singer, a teacher and a learner. I am an artist and a friend. I am a peace worker.

I have lived and worked with the Bedouin in Saudi Arabia and I have experienced their incredible… Continue
