Something About Me and My Book:
Aspiring novelist. I have a lot of work strewn all over my computer. Some finished, some not. I have no delusions of how hard it is to become published, or even to market your book. It seems like your level of success is primarily based on luck and connections. And getting a good agent.

I try to use different mediums, settings, stages, to make a point, to stretch the mind, and to push the envelope. I would hate to be pigeon holed. I believe the best authors are those that don't stick to one genre, but aren't afraid to use unconventional ways to tell a story.

Right now I am working on completing a novel with the goal in mind of getting it published. I have no expectations. Just wanting to see how far I get with that goal.

Authors that Inspire Me

The four authors that inspired me to start writing:
Lewis, Tolkien, Orwell, Dostoyevsky

I put them in that order because that is the timeline. I read C.S. Lewis for fun and his writing is so masterful, I really don't think anyone else has quite a grasp on language as he does. Tolkien made me enjoy fiction again. I had a period where I just hated it. Tolkien rekindled that fire. Orwell taught me that creating worlds outside your own isn't lame, nor cheesy, nor lazy, but truly a great way to open the mind. My greatest mentor is Dostoyevsky. He dives into the darker sides of humanity, the depravity, and really shows how bad things can get when we start to accept certain philosophies and ideals.

Other authors:
Philip K. Dick made me appreciate science fiction again. There are so many science fiction writers I loathe. It really amazed me how though science fiction requires imagination, many of the science fiction writers had none. Dick really stretched the genre I think and went to unconventional forms of writing and story that hasn't been done.

Thomas Pynchon opened my mind to post-modern ways of writing. Though he is the hardest writer to read in the history of mankind (he's so abstract), he slices open your worldview in ways I hadn't imagined before.

Cormac McCarthy proved to me that you can be a legitimate and respected author while using mediums that are not so conventional. The Road is a perfect example. Usually post-apocalyptic themes are frowned upon, or reserved for the science fiction inclined. He really bursts that bubble with this book and proves that you can use any medium in story telling and still be powerful, insightful, and awe inspiring.

There are many others. These are the one's that came to mind. I'd recommend all of them if you haven't picked up one of their books.
