Writing is the easy part, getting your books noticed and on to bookshelves is another matter altogether. My books sell mostly locally. You can apply for Waterstone's to sell your books. It involves Gardners, (Waterstones and others get their books through them) and, if accepted, when you get a list of stores, getting in touch with each manager to see if they will take a book or books.
