Lost and Found: A John Muir Trail Thru-hike

In Lost and Found, author and experienced backpacker Michelle “Brownie” Pugh transports readers to the High Sierras of California for over two hundred miles of adventure along the John Muir Trail.

Backpacking the 211-mile John Muir Trail was exactly what the doctor ordered when Michelle found herself ready for a new adventure. She convinced her dad—who had no outdoor experience—to become her hiking partner. Their year of training was the source of innumerable hilarious and heartwarming tales. Right before the ultimate and much-anticipated father-daughter trip, a devastating turn of events changed everything and Michelle found herself scrambling for a new hiking partner.

Prepare to feel the full gamut of emotions as you traverse the trail alongside Michelle, her new hiking partner Sarah, and a motley crew of hikers. These adventurers brave weather extremes including lightning-filled hailstorms and temperatures ranging from thirty to a hundred degrees as they hike through five national parks on their trek from Yosemite Valley to Mount Whitney.

The serene beauty of high mountain passes and alpine lakes is mixed with riotous tales of river crossings, missing signs, and hiking companions. Setbacks from giant blisters, scarring wounds, and altitude sickness can’t dampen the joy of completing daunting climbs, watching meteor showers from a tent, or summiting the highest mountain in the contiguous United States.

You’re guaranteed to laugh out loud. The details are so enticing that, by the last page, Lost and Found may have you heading out to purchase your own pair of hiking boots. Lost and Found also contains supplemental information including meal planning, itinerary, mail drop addresses, and gear lists for would-be thrill-seekers considering embarking on their own John Muir Trail adventure.

The author, Michelle “Brownie” Pugh, who also published Love at First Hike, began tackling long-distance hiking trails after graduating from Furman University with a degree in philosophy. She has completed the Appalachian Trail, the Foothills Trail (twice), and the John Muir Trail. An emergency responder by day and a writer by night, she enjoys promoting her love of the outdoors through her role as an advisor to the League of Adventurous Women. When she isn’t being active by hiking, playing tennis, or doing yoga, she can be found gardening, playing the guitar, or quilting for her online Etsy store MichellesMakings. Michelle is an avid adventurer with an always-expanding bucket list.
