- “We are gathered here today to say farewell to Mary Belle Jenkins. She was a loving mother, devoted wife, and eager church worker. She leaves behind a daughter, Tabitha, and a special friend, Margaret Homil.”
“Special friend? She’s the special friend?” a voice said among the crowd. “I’m the one who changed her bedpans, her dirty clothes when she lost her mind, and I kept her business straight,” the voice said.
Suddenly, a lady who I could only deem as Mrs. Homil turned around, and with a straight face, she said, “I guess you weren’t that special.”
Pow, right in the mouth.
This is all just a normal day on the job for Richie Keenan, columnist for The Eagle. As a feature writer, he frequents funerals all week, secretly documenting the bizarre events that take place and the unusual people who attend. He writes under the alias of Mitch Ford, but he struggles to keep his identity a secret as his column gains popularity.
In his humorous yet contemplative novel, R.C. Allen Jr. manages to blend the funny mishaps that can occur at funerals with important life lessons we can all gain while mourning the loss of a loved one in The Funeral Writer.
R.C. Allen Jr. is married, has two sons, and resides in Norfolk, Va. He's a former reporter and managing editor. He was also a Navy Mass Communications Specialist.

New Website Now Covers Funeral News Across The Web
NORFOLK, VA (Dec.19, 2012)-In line with the book, "The Funeral Writer", author R. C. Allen Jr. has revamped his website to add a special area: Funeral News.
"I can't think of a better way to promote the book rather than bring the idea of blogging about funeral news to reality," he said. "It's been an interesting project".
