Something About Me and My Book:
We all remember where we were on the morning of 9/11. Most of us remember more precisely what we were doing on the morning of 9/11. Many of us remember vividly what we were thinking and discussing on the morning of 9/11. After that time American citizens perhaps more than any other time in history had been bombarded with information about the enemy. Most remember the image projected by that information but, fewer can recall every rendition of text that collectively moved to evoke that image. The idea behind this book, America & Iraq: Seduced By Fear, is to first set forth the concept of textual imagery (information filtered to us second by second) as an abstract, yet very present phenomenon in the daily lives of our citizens. Textual imagery refers to the lasting images that are evoked through various modes of text. Each day citizens genuinely desiring to be educated about world events, international policy, and the lives of the cultural other, are bombarded with textual imagery. That is to say that information is presented to them in the form of auditory (such as: radio or water-cooler conversation), ocular (such as the photographed or televised), and written text ( such as newspaper or other popular press). While the text acts as merely a vehicle, it is the imagery that often remains with the individual long after the text has been administered. This text may carry powerful images in combination with incomplete information, which together create a textual imagery that may in fact may not be authentic nor educative. The textual imagery put before the U.S. Citizenry in preparation for war on Iraq is a complex example of the impact of textual imagery on perspective, policy, and polity. The second and related aspect of this book relates to a call to revisit the way in which the concept of citizenship has actually been relegated to a diminished voice. The very notion of freedom is contemplated as well as its vital relationship to meaningful choice. Finally a framework for an organic citizenship is set forth as one that renews the role of authentic voice and freedom.

The New Iraq: Genocide of the Gentle

Of all the physical damage that has been done to Iraq, the greatest damage has been done to the culture itself. Iraq has lost much of her cultural capital. Cultural capital as evidenced in the arts, education, healthcare, science, social justice, education, and law enforcement are the many artifacts of any civil society. Iraq began to lose many objects of value earlier; during the U.S. embargo against Iraq when families began selling Persian carpets, jewelry, wardrobes, and family heirlooms to… Continue

Chapter 1: Introduction To The Context of My Book

IN THE AUTUMN of 2001, I received a phone call from a nongovernmental organization (NGO) in Washington

D.C. asking me to describe my eye-witness experience of the terror. I relayed the following narrative:

* * *

"My narrative takes me back to a place in the north of Iraq, where my eyewitness experience began. I am in the place where the old city of Mosul is home to the ancient city of Nineveh and to the ancient histories of the diverse peoples of the North. I am with… Continue

The New Iraq: A Void of Cultural Capital

Of all the damage that has been done to Iraq; through the U.S. invasion and occupation, the greatest damage has been done to the culture itself. Cultural capital is foundational to all artifacts of civil society such as the arts, education, healthcare, science, and social justice.

Cultural capital itself is not a concrete thing and yet it is manifested in so many things; such as excellent education, quality health care, and the law & order of every advanced civil society. Upon the… Continue

Peace Is Not Paved With Violence

When the United States declared war on Iraq in 2003 Nelson Mandela declared that the invasion should be “condemned in the strongest terms." The voices of such statesmen from around the world were not centerpiece to the information being conveyed to American citizens during the time leading up to the invasion. Centerpiece to that information was strong conveyances linking Iraq to the Taliban, terror, and weapons of mass destruction. These powerful conveyances were inaccurate and fear-producing.… Continue

Electoral Strategy vs. Integrity on 2008 Campaign Issues

A recent New York Times front page article, Decisive on 9/11, Giuliani Now Faces a Big Choice, read, “Rudolph W. Giuliani, who developed a national reputation for decisive and reassuring leadership after 9/11, now faces the odd challenge of having to reassure some supporters that he can be decisive about a very different issue: running for president (Roberts, 2007).” What is striking about this article; is not this article in particular, but how many other articles of the like, adult citizens… Continue

Hello –
How’s the writing going? Just thought I’d pass along
some websites you might be interested in.
http://www.joafulkerson.com where you can read the
first chapter of FOR LOVE OF TEDDY. This is the
story of a high school senior who takes a stand against drug
dealers…and WINS. It’s the first of several I plan to write to
reach out to at risk kids and teens who might not have
anywhere else to turn when faced with crises in their lives.
