Angels and Quilt Pieces . . . Our Journey with a Katrina Family by Stephanie Ehmen

September 2005. In the after-math of Hurricane Katrina, we had no idea that we were about to embark on an unexpected journey. Wanting to help in a hands-on way, we volunteered at a church sponsored shelter. Here we would meet Mr. & Mrs. Thornton and their seven precious children. By the end of our volunteer week, we had earned the trust of Mr. Thornton and the children had found a place of refuge in our arms.

“. . . when a traumatized little girl threw herself into my arms there was no way that I could sit back and let this little girl and her family fend for themselves. We could have finished our week of volunteer time and gone back to our daily routine, but we chose not to walk away when this family needed someone to help them. We have reminded ourselves over and over that God led us here for a reason.”

Our journey over the following months has changed our lives forever. As the days, weeks and months progress, the Thornton’s tell us their story in bits and pieces. We are telling our story through our own eyes, what we saw, heard and witnessed. It will make you laugh and cry, it will make you angry and warm your heart. We will be eternally grateful to all the “Angels” who helped us out along the way by giving this family “pieces for their quilts”.

The Prayers of a Child

To understand how amazing Marquel's prayers are, I must first tell you of her background.

Born in New Orleans, she was the 5th child of an alcoholic mother. An older brother had already died of neglect not long before she was born. Another sister and brother would be added by the time Marquel was 5 years old.

Her mother could not hold a job, had no real desire to have one, and would do anything for her beer. The one room apartment had a bed with a filthy mattress, but no… Continue

California vs. New Orleans

California vs. New Orleans

Watching the news of the California fires, I cannot imagine the horrible feelings that must come with seeing your home in ashes, along with all your personal treasures and memories. The further scope of whole neighborhoods and the destruction that fire leaves behind must be absolutely devastating. My heart goes out to all of those who go "home" to face this horrible…

Why did I write this book?

As time went by following Hurricane Katrina, and we talked with more people, we began to hear a recurring story. We saw and heard from many very good hearted people who were trying to do what they could to help in various ways, but were left feeling betrayed when the recipient did not act or react in the way that was expected. We heard questions such as, “Why…

Wow, great story, Stephanie. I have a poem in my book you should probably read. It's called "Glimmer of Hope" and it was inspired by the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.

Good luck to you!
