I design a lot of book covers but I'm rarely asked to use my cartooning skills for the cover image. The most recent requests came from author Richard Herr for his books, Invasion From Fred (a YA novel) and Dog & Pony, Vol. 1: Aloha (a quirky, humorous novel in which all sort of crazy mishaps befall a company that organizes business and product presentations for their clients).
The idea for the cover of Invasion From Fred came almost immediately after I read through portions of the manuscript.

Dog & Pony, on the other hand, was quite a bit more challenging. The author's fist idea was to use a cartoon image of a dog and a pony to symbolize the concept from which the title is derived. After several revisions, this was the result:

Sure, it was cute but it didn't really work because it makes it seem as if the story is actually about a dog and a pony which, as I mentioned above, isn't the case at all. So the author suggested maybe a guy on stage delivering a presentation and I came up with this:

That was a better representation of the story but the author didn't like the character for various reasons. Then he suggested maybe an illustration of a scene from the story. He offered a few suggested scenes and this one (below), featuring three of the main characters from the story, seemed the most adaptable to a book cover in terms of composing the scene so as to accommodate the title placement and author name.

At last! Nailed it! LOL! Getting to this point involved a lot of time, effort and creative head-scratching. But the author was willing to go the extra mile regarding the cost and, in the end, he was thrilled with the result. And that's what it's all about. A happy customer is a return customer! Like, for example, the award-winning author, Hank Quense, who was among the first to approach me with a request for cartoon illustrations of some of the characters in his quirky sci-fi/fantasy novels. In Hank's case, I was able to nail the cover images on the first attempt. Here's one of my favorites that I did for Hank:

If you want to connect with me about designing the cover for your next book, visit my site where you can see my low prices and dozens of my more traditional types of cover art.
ASH: Return of the Beast is a supernatural crime thriller, a tale of revenge steeped in the occult. The story is a work of fiction based on a little known factoid about the death of Aleister Crowley (1875-1947), the notorious occultist the British press once called "The Wickedest Man In The World". Crowley’s body was cremated but the disappearance of the urn containing his ashes has remained a mystery… until now.

This diabolical tale propels the reader through a series of curiously interconnected events spanning the years from 1947 (and the death of Aleister Crowley) to the 1990s and the coming-of-age (and eventual stardom) of a "death-metal" rocker with the unlikely name of Rodney Duckworth.

The time-line shifts to the present day where Brian Kane, a gruff and gritty street-worn Seattle Police Detective, reluctantly teams up with the mysterious Rowena Ravenwood, an attractive and rather unconventional female FBI agent assigned to a most unusual investigative unit. Their task is to figure out why good, healthy, God-fearing preachers in their fair city are suddenly dropping dead... one at a time... nine days apart.

What is the meaning of the strange symbols branded onto the bodies of these hapless victims? Are they all part of some bizarre cult? No eyewitnesses. No fingerprints. Is it really murder? Where’s the evidence? And what is the disturbing secret that Detective Kane is holding so close to his chest?

The investigation catapults Kane and Ravenwood headlong into life-threatening situations as they wind their way through the strange, dark labyrinth of the world of the occult and find themselves battling for their lives against the powerful forces of ritual magick.

A bloody carnage of unimaginable horror is about to be unleashed upon the world. The survival of the entire human race hangs in the balance and the clues to help solve the case are in desperately short supply. Worse yet, so is the amount of time left to stop the mysterious killer's reign of terror before all Hell breaks loose. And – according to Special Agent Ravenwood – that’s not just a figure of speech.

REVIEWS:

"Wow...Dan Brown fans watch out!
One of the interesting things about writing a novel is that the process often requires the writer to reach down inside in order to access the storehouse of thoughts, feelings and life experiences that he’s accumulated over the years so he can apply some of it to the story and make the words on the page reflect some semblance of “reality”. I guess that’s a long-winded way of repeating the old adage, ‘Write what you know’. But what if you have a story idea that requires you to write what you don’t know or, worse yet, to write what you’re uncomfortable with?

If you’re going to write what you don’t know, there’s always the option to do the research necessary to familiarize yourself with a formerly unfamiliar topic. Writing what you’re uncomfortable with is something else again. That’s what I had to wrestle with when it came to writing my second novel, Ash: Return Of The Beast (www.ashreturnofthebeast.webs.com).

I remember when the idea for the story first hit me about three years ago. I was browsing the shelves at a used-book store and came across a biography of the infamous occultist, Aleister Crowley (1875-1947). Due to my life-long fascination with all things paranormal, I was at least somewhat familiar with Crowley. I knew he was considered a master of ritual magic or what some call the Dark Arts. I knew his picture appeared on the cover of the Beatles’ Sgt. Pepper album and I knew that several musicians of the hard rock variety were into him. I knew he’d been branded by the British press as ‘The Wickedest Man In The World’ and I knew Musolini had kicked him out of Italy. I even had a copy of a strange little book entitled The Book Of The Law that was allegedly dictated to Crowley by a nonhuman entity near the Great Pyramid in 1904. What I didn’t know, until I read that biography, was that his body was cremated and that the urn containing his ashes had mysteriously vanished. Wait. What??? I had to flip the page back and read it again to make sure I’d read it correctly. Wow, I thought. If that isn’t the foundation for good mystery novel, I don’t know what is.

At first I was super motivated and eager to start writing. But as I continued to sketch out a story I soon began to realize this was not going to be the same sort of creative experience that I’d had with my first novel, The Ezekiel Code (www.ezekielcode.com). Sure, Code contained its share of bad guys sneaking around in the shadows, a couple of murders and some foul play. But it was all pretty much standard fare for an adventure/mystery novel. Ash, I could see, was going to be darker. Much darker. Darker than maybe I was prepared to go. Could I dredge up something that disturbing from the depths of my own storehouse of life experiences? I don’t want to spoil the story for you here, so I won’t disclose any details. I’ll just say, after I thought about it, I realized I didn’t have anything quite that disturbing in my life experience. So how was I going to bring any sense of reality to it?

Clearly, I was going to have to do some research and learn how real people have endured such experiences, how it affected them emotionally and psychologically and what effect it had on their lives after the experience. So, I did the research to familiarize myself with those issues to the point where I felt comfortable enough to incorporate it into the story. But feeling comfortable enough with it and actually writing it were two different things. I found out I was afraid of the Dark, the Dark within. I told my best friend that I felt like I had to go wash my hands or take a complete shower after writing the first incident of one specific heinous activity.

However, I believed the story was too good to abandon and I knew if I just let it go it would haunt me for the rest of my days. So I carried on even though my own sensibilities were rebelling against me. Much to my surprise, I actually got used to it. In fact, I got to the point where I enjoyed it. I was no longer afraid of the Dark. So, how did that happen? Pretty simple, really.

Once I got far enough into the development of the story, the characters ceased to be mere concepts in my head. They began to take shape, physically, emotionally and psychologically. They became real people involved in real situations. It wasn’t me who was doing those awful things to the characters. The characters were doing those things to each other. That’s when, as a writer, you’re “in the Zone”. I love being in the Zone. There are no boundaries, no limitations in the Zone. It’s the place where the writer experiences the freedom to let the story evolve as it will and any intimidating sensibilities that might otherwise get in the way... well, they’re just out of luck. The story must go on.

And so it did. Now, three years after the initial idea hit me, Ash: Return Of The Beast is finished and available on Kindle for just $3.99. I hope to have a paperback edition available by the end of January, 2012.

I was just reading a blog where a lady said she was ashamed to admit
she tends to ignore books with amateurish covers even though she
suspects some of the stories inside those covers might be pretty good.

As a book cover designer (www.bookcoversandvideos.webs.com) I can tell
you no one should feel guilty about judging a book by its cover.

Why?

Because
humans are, by nature, extremely sensitive to first impressions. The
corporate world has known this for a long time. That's why they spend
tens of millions of dollars every year on market surveys and research to determine
the effectiveness of their product packaging.

Two important things for authors to remember:

1. A potential reader's first impression of your book is the cover. There is an entire psychology built around the concept of "first impressions"
that should be understood by anyone whose product (books, in this case)
is just one among many in competition for the public's attention.

2. Think of the cover of your book in terms of "product packaging" in the
same way that manufacturers regard the packaging of their products. The
cover of your book is the "packaging", the "box" (metaphorically
speaking) that contains the "product". The product is the story inside
the "box". More
often than not, a potential buyer's assumption about the quality of the
product is determined by their perception of the quality of the
packaging.

Research has shown that people tend to make purchasing decisions within a matter of just a few seconds based on their perception of the product (that "first impression") which is
influenced by the packaging.

It's pretty simple really. You're at the store. You see two products from two different manufacturers,
side by side, and both products are exactly the same and so are the
prices. But one is packaged very attractively with a polished, professional look and the other packaging is rather
generic and boring.
I know many authors (I'm one of you!) are feeling the financial crunch. That's why I try to keep my design fees as low as possible. Right now my basic fee for a front cover only is $144 and for a full wrap (front/spine/back) it's only $288. This is about the lowest pricing for this quality of design work you are likely to find anywhere. But here's the thing. I'm going to have to raise these prices by about 30% in September. Still very reasonable prices but why not take advantage of the current rock-bottom prices while you still can?

My 30 years in the graphics and illustration field have never been so rewarding as the experience of designing book covers. I love the creative challenge of reflecting the essence of an author's story in a visual form. My job, as a cover designer, is to give the potential reader (and, hopefully, the potential buyer!) the motivation to pick up the book and give it a browse. Once that first impression is made and the book is opened the rest is up to the author's words.

Just to provide a couple samples of the range of my work, below is one of the cover ideas for the novel I'm currently writing, followed by covers I did for other authors which are in a completely different style and genre.

Two books have been released this year, each focusing on the esoteric underpinnings of the foundation of the Unites States of America and the symbolism related to these underpinnings that are scattered all over Washington D.C. and most notably in the U.S. Capitol building itself. The books are Dan Brown's novel, The Lost Symbol, and William Henry's non-fiction work,Freedom's Gate: The Lost Symbols in the U.S. Capitol. Both of these authors focus heavily on a painting called The Apotheosis that adorns the top of the interior of the Capitol's great dome.

In this paper we are going to apply what I call CryptoNumerology (basically a system of gematria based on the English alphabet www.secretofnine.com) to the concepts inherent in the notion of the apotheosis as it pertains to the Capitol Dome.

CryptoNumerology, a form of English-based gematria, uses the simple serial code of A=1 through Z=26. A working hypothesis underlying this divination system is that the number 9 is a key element in the nature of our reality, may in some manner be connected to the phenomenon of synchronicity, and is intrinsically woven into the holographic fabric of the interdimensional Mulitverse.

NINE IS THE KEY = 144 = THE SECRET KEY = MULTIVERSE
1+4+4 = 9

---------------------------------------------------------------------

Painted by Brumidi in 1865, the extraordinary artwork called The Apotheosis is located in the eye of the Rotunda, the top of the great dome of the U.S. Capitol. The word "apotheosis" refers to a kind of ascension process, the elevation of a person to the status of a god. The painting covers an area of 4,664 square feet. It is 180 feet above the floor.

4664 = 18 = 9

180 = 9

Some interesting facts: 180 feet is equal to 55 meters. HEAVEN=55. The exterior dome ascends to 288 feet including the height of the Statue of Freedom which sits atop the dome. 288 feet is equal to 88 meters. GATE+HEAVEN = 88. (More on 88, below) The number 288 is called by some the "double light" number because it is 2 x 144 and the number 144 is esoterically associated with the concept of "Light". Is it mere "coincidence" that these numbers correspond to words and phrases that, in turn, correspond to the whole idea of apotheosis?

There are 72 stars in the ring surrounding the painting.
There are 5 concentric rings surrounding the ring of 72 stars. Each of those five rings contains 36 squares. Each of those squares contains 8 small "dots" in a hexagonal pattern.

HEXAGON = 74 = JESUS
HEXAGRAM = 77 = CHRIST

36 x 5 = 180, the same as the height (in feet) of the painting from the floor of the Rotunda.

180 + 72 = 252 = CHRIST CONSCIOUSNESS = CONSCIOUSNESS OF LIGHT = JESUS CHRIST SUN OF GOD = ALCHEMICAL MARRIAGE OF MALE AND FEMALE

Is it possible that the 5 concentric rings may represent the orbits of the planets with the sun at the center as envisioned by Copernicus? At the time of Copernicus there were only 5 planets known to exist. Below is a photo of the interior of the U.S. Capitol dome (upper image) and the Roman Pantheon (lower image) with the Copernicus planetary system superimposed upon it. This idea of the Copernicus connection was proposed by Hollywood film editor, Walter Murch (http://bldgblog.blogspot.com/2007/04/heliocentric-pantheon-interview-with.html).

There are 36 windows encompassing the entire dome of the U.S. Capitol. Using CryptoNumerology we find the English gematria value of the word "window" (88) corresponds to quite a list of other words and phrases with the same value, each of which can be seen to have a relationship to the concepts implied by the apotheosis along with elements related to Christianity:

WINDOW = 88 =
GATE+HEAVEN
IMMANUEL (Meaning "god with us")
IESOUS (Greek spelling for "JESUS")
I AM THE LIFE (Jesus said)
APOSTLE
FISH MAIDEN (Possible reference to Mary Magdalene via the Christian symbol of the fish.)
SACRED BRIDE (Possible reference to Mary Magdalene as the bride of Jesus Christ.)
AKASHIC FIELD
PURPLE (A color associated with royalty)
BLUE BLOOD (A term referring to royalty)
BLOOD LINE
GRAIL CHALICE
GRAIL KEY
LIFE LIGHT (Possible reference to the 36 windows through which the light enters the dome?)
MITHRAS (Another "god-man" with attributes similar to those associated with Jesus Christ)
THE SONG (Possible reference to the "Music of the Spheres", and idea related to the orbits of the planets?)
SALAMANDER (mystical, alchemical symbol of the marriage of fire and air)
BIRTH CANAL (Possible association with concept of rebirth of Man or transformation from Man to GodMan? GOD+MAN = 54 = SUN = BREATH = VOICE = TONE)

EIGHTY EIGHT IS A CODE NUMBER = 252 = CHRIST CONSCIOUSNESS = CONSCIOUSNESS OF LIGHT = JESUS CHRIST SUN OF GOD = ALCHEMICAL MARRIAGE OF MALE AND FEMALE

JESUS CHRIST SUN OF GOD IS THE LIGHT = 369 = CHRIST CONSCIOUSNESS IS THE LIGHT = DEOXYRIBOSE NUCLEIC ACID CODE IS THE LIGHT (Note: Deoxyribose Nucleic Acid is the scientific nomenclature for which DNA is the common acronym.)

DOUBLE EIGHT = 108 = THE LAMB OF GOD = GEOMETRY
THE SACRIFICIAL LAMB OF GOD = 198 = THE RESURRECTION = THE WINDOW OF LIGHT

As mentioned before, there are 36 windows in the dome.
WINDOW = 88
Multiply 88(window) by 36 = 3168
The city of Bethlehem (birthplace of Jesus) rests on the latitude of 31.68 deg. N. The phrase "Kurios Iesous Xristos" is Greek for "Lord Jesus Christ". The Greek gematria value of "Kurios Iesous Xristos" is 3168.

The Washington Monument is 555 feet tall.
FIVE = 42
Substituting the 5s in 555 with the gematria value of the word "Five" we find this:
42+42+42 = 126
ONE TWO SIX = 144 = NINE IS THE KEY = THE SECRET KEY
THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA = 261 = THE LIGHT OF JESUS CHRIST
TWO SIX ONE = 144 = NINE IS THE KEY = THE SECRET KEY

William Henry says: "The octagonal arcade of the Dome of the Rock in Jerusalem is a perfect fit when superimposed over the Apotheosis."
THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA = 261 = THE LIGHT OF JESUS CHRIST

TWO SIX ONE = 144 = NINE IS THE KEY = THE SECRET KEY

The number 144 is esoterically associated with the concept of "Light". The Great Pyramid was originally covered with 144,000 sheets of highly polished limestone thus causing the light of the sun to reflect off the pyramid which, in turn, made it shine like a light that could be seen for miles across the desert.

The majority of the gematria values shown above are all multiples of 9 and can be reduced to the single digit of 9 by calculating the sum of the individual digits in the larger number:

4464 (4+4+6+4=18, 1+8=9)
36 (3+6=9)
Mythologist William Henry (http://www.williamhenry.net) believes the ring of 72 stars surrounding the painting of The Apotheosis is, or represents, what he calls a "stargate". Dan Brown, in his novel, The Lost Symbol, uses the term "portal", part of the Ancient Mysteries, known only to an initiated few and protected over the ages by the Free Masons. CryptoNumerology reveals the word "gate". As previously mentioned, the word "apotheosis" refers to a kind of ascension process, the elevation of a person to the status of a god. Is the dome of the U.S. Capitol, indeed, some sort of an opening into another dimension of being? And if so, is it only a symbolic representation or is it the real thing?
1969: just two years after the fabled "Summer of Love" when Flower Children danced in the streets to the sounds of The Grateful Dead and the sweet smell of "Mary Jane" wafted freely in the summer breeze, and just four months after Woodstock, the biggest rock-n-roll show ever to shake the planet, the rising young rock star, Vince Blaylock, was playing a big New Year's gig completely unaware that he was about to take a trip that was considerably more "far out" than his beloved LSD could ever have provided. But it wasn't going to be nearly as much fun. In fact it was going to be a nightmare beyond his wildest imagination. Vince Blaylock was about to take A BITE OUT OF TIME.
Obama's campaign ran on the platform of change. His first term ends in 2012, the prophetic end of the ancient Mayan calendar. Talk about change! December 21, 2012 marks the end of an "Age" or "Sun" as they referred to it in their culture. It also marks the beginning of a new Age – perhaps even a new age of enlightenment – but it is said the current Age will bring "the end of the world as we know it" and that end could be catastrophic. Many non-fiction books have been written about this coming event (just Google "2012, mayan calendar" and you'll see what I mean). However, only a handful of novels have been written around this theme. My novel, The Ezekiel Code, is one of those few. As the story unfolds a frightening question comes into play: Can we even make it to 2012? Why would such a question be asked? Oh, now it would be a bit of a spoiler if I revealed that, wouldn't it?

So while we're all waiting to see just what kind of changes we end up with at the end of Obama's first term in 2012, why not curl up with a good book which is unique among the rest, to say the least. The Ezekiel Code. 2012 is coming... Or is it?

The story behind THE EZEKIEL CODE:

The seed that eventually grew to become The Ezekiel Code was actually planted many years prior to having any notion of writing a novel.

Back in the late 60s I had decided to read the Bible from cover to cover. I can't say I read every word but I did at least read "through" it from beginning to end. Now, having had an interest in the UFO phenomenon since the age of about 12, some of the passages in the Bible struck me as being somewhat similar to reports I'd read about UFO sightings. I first noticed it in the story of the Israelite's long journey through the desert. They followed a "pillar of cloud by day" and a "pillar of fire by night". That struck me as a rather curious phenomenon. Added to that was the Ark of the Covenant which functioned to somehow to serve as a communication device between "God" and Moses, the leader of this band of wandering Jews. I wondered, could the Ark be some sort of a wireless communication technology so "God" (or whatever it was!) could talk to Moses from his "ship", the pillar of cloud by day, lit up at night? Then in the book of Numbers this "cloud" that carried "God" actually landed on the ground. Then there was Elijah who was "taken up" in a "whirlwind". It was becoming curiouser and curiouser. Then came the hammer that hit me on the head. It was the book of Ezekiel. His descriptions of the object that came down from the sky seemed much too mechanical to be anything of an ethereal nature. His incredibly detailed descriptions seemed to me like the way someone of his time in history, with a priestly background and absolutely no knowledge of advanced technology (beyond a cart pulled by a donkey), would describe a technological craft. Some years later I discovered a book called The Spaceships of Ezekiel written by a former NASA contract engineer by the name of Joseph Blumrich. His son had noticed the same things about Ezekiel's descriptions that I had noticed and, knowing the nature of his father's work with NASA, he told his father about it. Blumrich didn't believe it at first but the more he studied it the more he began to change his mind. The book is his professional analysis of what it was that Ezekiel may actually have encountered. After reading that book I was left with not a shred of doubt that Ezekiel had experienced what we now call a Close Encounter of the Third Kind.

Fast forward to sometime in the mid-90s:

My lady/lover/friend, Julie, and I were sitting in an all-night diner at about 2 o'clock in the morning. I think maybe we had been to see a sci-fi movie earlier in the evening which is probably what sparked a conversation about UFOs. Once again, this idea about Ezekiel came to the forefront of my mind and I told Julie about it. I mentioned that the idea would make a great theme for someone like Spielberg or Lucas to build a movie around. The more I thought about it the more I liked the idea but I knew I had no way of getting the idea to either of those guys. This left me quite disappointed. I'd probably never get to see this idea on the big screen. Then it hit me. I can't make a movie but I can write. Why don't I write a novel based on this idea? I was all ready half way through the writing of another sci-fi novel at the time but this idea struck me as so extraordinary that I immediately shelved the other novel and began sketching out ideas for this new book which, at the time, had a working title of Ezekiel's Wheels. So how and why did it change from Ezekiel's Wheels to The Ezekiel Code? That was a two-part process of an organic nature.

Part-1 of the process:

At about the same time I started working on the book I was also well into the beginning stages of another little exploration that eventually began to take over my life. I had, quite by accident, stumbled onto the idea that the English alphabet might be naturally or artificially "encoded" in some manner so as to correspond with our base-10 numbering system and that, somehow, the number 9 and the phenomenon of "synchronicity" were key to the whole thing. That, in itself, is a long story and the work is detailed at www.secretofnine.com. The bottom line is that this work was so ingrained into my consciousness that it almost naturally began to flow into my ideas about the plot of my book. It provided a perfect plot device to propel the story. Not only did I recognize how well it would work I also knew it was so original that it would be unique among anything else that was out there.

Part-2 of the process:

I was not at all happy with the working title, Ezekiel's Wheels. It wasn't dramatic enough. It wasn't very catchy. Sort of... blah. Then one day, maybe around 2003/2004, I heard about a book by one of my favorite "alternative" researchers, Gregg Braden. His book was called The God Code. That reminded me of the title of Dosnin's best selling book, The Bible Code. And Julie had recently purchased a book called Healing Codes of the Biological Apocalypse (a book, by the way, in which the co-author had made one of the same key discoveries about the English alphabet that I had made a few years earlier!). At the same time came the phenomenal best-selling The DaVinci Code. Well, I'm not blind. I started to recognize a pattern. All of these books were best sellers in their respective categories. Clearly the public had a thirst for anything with the word "code" in the title. How fortuitous for me! My book definitely had the code element going for it so I latched onto the idea and changed the title to The Ezekiel Code. As soon as I made that change all the little things that kept blocking my progress regarding the direction of the plot just fell away and the story began to write itself, sometimes so fast I could hardly keep up with it even though it did take me nearly 9 years to complete the darn thing!

So that, in a nut shell, is the story behind The Ezekiel Code.

"2012 is coming...The clock is ticking...The code must be deciphered...And only one man can save the planet...If he can just figure out how...Before it's too late."
