Saturday was Animal Kingdom day at Disney for us. The best part was that the trip was great for my figure. I must have lost a few pounds in the scorching heat! So what does one do when it’s so blistering hot? What else, you get a crispy funnel cake sprinkled with powdered sugar and enjoy it to the fullest.<br />

I know, I know, crazy…but sometimes we need to do nutty things. We munched on that sweet treat and headed to the bird show.<br />

So what does one do when it’s so blistering hot? What else, you get a crispy funnel cake sprinkled with powdered sugar and enjoy it to the fullest.<br />
<br />
I know, I know, crazy…but sometimes we need to do nutty things. We munched on that sweet treat and headed to the bird show.<br />
<br />
“Okay, everybody,” the bird trainer said. “Does anybody have any questions about birds?”<br />
<br />
“Can birds smell?” A squeaky voice came from the side.<br />
<br />
“No, birds cannot smell. There’s only one bird that can, however,” he said, panting from the heat. “The vulture smells its prey and zooms after it once his sense of smell tells him the exact location.”<br />
<br />
Yuck. I pictured a vulture dipping down and ripping apart its dead meal.<br />
<br />
And with that image, I had news for that trainer. There’s someone else who has a great sense of smell and resembles no bird I know. Actually we cannot see him, but he does plunge to its prey with one sniff of its location.<br />
<br />
Have you experienced it? When things just don’t work out, unresolved conflicts nag at you, when days fall apart, or when people just make you crazy…the dark bird called Satan plunges right into our thoughts and begins its banquet. One bite at a time, he rips away our joy, our peace, our trust, and our sense of security.<br />
<br />
He can smell the moment life turns a bit sour, he knows that’s when we’re vulnerable, weak, and an easy prey for his tactics.<br />
<br />
The Bible doesn’t call him a bird, but a lion that does the same destruction. So, when life gets a bit heated, “Be self-controlled and alert. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. Resist him, standing firm in the faith…” (1 Peter 5:8-9).<br />
<br />
Hide under the faith that keeps you going forward, take refuge in the reassurance that covers you against his deadly bites, and seek shelter in God’s arms where no bird of despair or lion inflicting pain can reach you.<br />

I lean over the table at our favorite restaurant. “I need to go to the ladies room.”<br />
<br />
You’d think by now I’d remember to take my white cane so I don’t have to bother hubby. Sigh.<br />
<br />
“Sure, hon.” He drops his fork on his plate. “Let’s go.”<br />
<br />
He takes me by the hand. We circle around tables and head down the hallway. When we reach the bathroom door, I hand him my purse. He opens the door, and whispers. “Go a little to your left.”<br />
<br />
I follow his instructions with no problem. But finding the way out…

So, hubby does his thing: At his 6’2”, 300 lbs. he stands outside the ladies’ room. And with my purse dangling from one hand, with the other he knocks on the door.<br />
<br />
It’s team work. While he’s determined to help me, I listen for the sound and find my way out.<br />
<br />
What a guy! He endures strange looks from others, perhaps silent mocking, or even reasonable suspicion. He doesn’t care, he’s still determined.<br />
<br />
But you and I know of a greater determination and commitment—the one two thousand years ago. Jesus endured lashing, flogging, ridicule, piercing, and torture on that gloomy Friday.<br />
<br />
But on Sunday, He opened the door to our freedom—from death, from fear, from sorrow, and from pain.<br />
<br />
He endured all on that awful Friday, but on Sunday He rose to triumph. He defeated evil and He destroyed death.<br />
<br />
Here’s a question for you and me: Considering the burdens that press in our heart…are we navigating aimlessly through life in the gloom of Friday? Or in the glory of that Sunday…<br />

Games for the Blind

There’s no such a thing, is there? Since I’ve not found games specifically for the blind, just about any game can be adjusted to those with low vision. I remember playing horseshoes when I lost my sight. Someone stands by the target spot and taps the metal, creating the sound to guide my aim. Sighted folks use their eyes to see where to throw; I use my hearing with the same goal.<br />

Through the years I’ve tried crazy things, even drove a car once. But last night my son invited me to play tennis.…

Through the years I’ve tried crazy things, even drove a car once. But last night my son invited me to play tennis. And I enthusiastically agreed. This game is played right indoors with the new game, WII made by Nintendo. What a hoot…it was great. I actually won.<br />
<br />
Here’s the trick: I had to listen, really listen to the sound—the racket hitting the ball, then the bounce, I give a quick swing. And then, SMACK! I hit that ball. What a great feeling when my son shouted, “Good hit!”<br />
<br />
It’s nothing that demands talent or skill. It’s just in the timing, the perfect timing blended with careful listening.<br />
<br />
When life bounces tough times, disappointments and gloomy days at us, God’s timing is also right on. And I do believe it’s because He listens, really listens to our moments of fear, our nervous reactions, the rumbling of our uncertain moves and even our foolish actions. He listens to it all and He knows the moment when we’re about to snap. Then, He swings a Word of encouragement, a promise that erases doubt and an instruction that takes you to a place of peace.<br />
<br />
If you’d not experienced this, it might be that you’re keeping your eye on the circumstance and thus haven’t listened. Remember Hannah and her pleas to God for a child? Her eyes were so focused on that want. But when she prayed, just simply prayed, God swung His answer. His timing was perfect, perhaps not for Hannah, but perfect according to His purpose.<br />
<br />
Are you waiting for God to untangle that financial mess, or, like me, scratch your head at the vicious campaign tactics? Or perhaps life just piled on you like bricks? Hang in there, because “…The eyes of the Lord are on the righteous and his ears are attentive to their cry. The eyes of the Lord are on those who fear Him, on those whose hope is in His unfailing love” (Psalm 34:15 and 33:18).<br />
<br />
When on God’s team, the victory is in the horizon. Be still. The ending score will leave you in awe.<br />
Thank you, Jesus, that in the game of life, where the world’s darkness grows, when I think I’m alone, as if carrying the burden all by myself, “…You have searched me and you know me. You know when I sit and when I rise; you perceive my thoughts from afar. You discern my going out and my lying down; you are familiar with all my ways” (Psalm 139:1-3).<br />
<br />
Lord, you are familiar with all the details, you know it all…and that reassurance is all I need in order to face one more day, to rekindle hope, and once again let joy seep into my soul.<br />

Our country is in a crisis with an overloaded Foster Care System and children falling through the cracks daily and being put into homes to provide safety only to be left neglected again. When I began to see that God had a mission for my life, I started to embrace my challenges and learn from them without looking back. I was able to rid myself of the victim mentality and succeed where I was told I never would.<br />

My prayer is that you see the message in My God Box and that it will inspire you to learn to overcome a traumatic experience and more importantly help someone else. I pray that you will agree that all it takes is a mustard seed of faith to realize your God Given potential.”<br />

INTERVIEW:<br />
<br />
You grew up in foster care—what was your experience like?<br />
<br />
My experience was most of the foster parents were not equipped to handle a troubled child who needed help. I was in poverty struck homes as well as abusive homes within the foster care system and these are the homes I advocate against. Children removed from their abusive home environments should not be put into a system that is not providing them a better environment than the home they were removed from.<br />
<br />
There are many wonderful foster parents who want to help children. But there are people who take in foster kids for the money—how can that be changed?<br />
<br />
Not all but too many foster parents see their role as a job not wanting to get too attached to the child as it is a temporary situation thus making the child feel like a 2nd class citizen. The daily stipend a foster parent receives is not a lot of money but if you take in a few children it can be more than a welfare check.<br />
<br />
Do you think there’s enough training for foster parents?<br />
<br />
There is not an easy answer to this problem with continual budget cuts within the foster care system but there really can't ever be enough training to learn how to cope with a child who needs help. You can become a foster parent in many states with only a few days of training and a criminal background check. Foster parents need so much more to make them successful.<br />
<br />
Is abuse a common problem in foster care?<br />
<br />
It is too common and this is due to lack of resources and money to create a system that rewards foster parents based on outcomes versus number of children per day you take in. Local Department of Children and Families needs to be monitoring these children more effectively to eliminate the abuse taking place in these homes. It is not okay to have one child abused within the system and this issue needs to be addressed as a priority.<br />
<br />
What compelled you to write My God Box?<br />
<br />
I feel I was blessed to have found God amid all the pain and misery I endured during my growing years. However, I also feel it’s time to give thanks and give back. I struggled for over two years with doubts and mixed feelings about setting my life in print, but whenever I took a step back, I was energized and encouraged by the awe-inspiring certainty that God wanted me to tell my story—for self-healing, but more importantly to open the minds and hearts of other suffering individuals to the mercy and goodness of God. God is hope. Without God there is no hope. Without hope there is no life.<br />
<br />
Tell us a little more about yourself.<br />
<br />
I am a wife, mother, entrepreneur and children’s rights activist with an unwavering faith in God that has led, leads and will undoubtedly lead me to the successful outcome of all my projects.<br />

That inquiry has become more common each day. Anxiety rises, worry presses on, uncertainty hovers above us and even the rope of job security is frayed.<br />
<br />
You and I know this doesn't catch God by surprise, nor does He leave us without answers, solutions or ways to cope and bring back reassurance and peace.<br />
<br />
He begins with this instruction:<br />
<br />
“Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank Him for all He has done. Then you will experience God's peace,…

Ah, it’s that coveted peace that is as elusive as rain in the desert. But that’s precisely the peace that God promises, that wonderful serene place where we can inhale His presence and exhale worry and fear.<br />
<br />
In the desert of our times we have the same God as the Israelites had—Jehovah who kept a watchful eye, observed their discontent at times, heard their cries of frustration, and even saw their rush for idols.<br />
<br />
He’s the same God who now watches the election saga, the stock market dip and rise, and even the foreclosure papers that slip in our hands. But with each detail, He’s still in control whispering “Don’t worry, just ask Me, trust Me, turn to Me and show Me gratitude.”<br />
<br />
And we do have lots to be grateful for. How can we forget…He parted the red sea…and for those of us who believe, He’ll part the way for us to reach the richness of the promised land, to drink his peace and reassurance. That confidence can flicker through when the scorching sun of finances burns our sleep.<br />
<br />
Inviting you to let Him guard your thoughts, and ponder on what He’s planned for tomorrow.<br />

Healing from Infidelity

I look back at that time, how devastated I was. But those memories are like a difficult work-out—it hurt; at times it stung. But afterwards the results made us both stronger.<br />
<br />
What was the secret? There was none. Forgiveness is no secret. It's as big and bold as a billboard written across the pages of God’s Word. Can’t miss…

So I gulped hard at the circumstance and obeyed. And yes, I wrote the details of searing pain to sweet reconciliation in Chapter 7 of my book, “Trials of Today, Treasures for Tomorrow: Overcoming Adversities in Life.”<br />
<br />
Sighing with relief, I would shout from the rooftops, “Obeying God always brings brilliant results.”<br />
<br />
What stirred that memory was an excerpt from a Max Lucado devotional:<br />
<br />
“I caught my husband making love to another woman. He swore it would never happen again. He begged me to forgive him, but I could not—would not. I was so bitter and so incapable of swallowing my pride that I could think of nothing but revenge. I was going to make him pay and pay dearly. I’d have my pound of flesh.<br />
<br />
I filed for divorce, even though my children begged me not to.<br />
<br />
Even after the divorce, my husband tried for two years to win me back. I refused to have anything to do with him. He had struck first; now I was striking back. All I wanted was to make him pay.<br />
<br />
Finally he gave up and married a lovely young widow with a couple of small children. He began rebuilding his life—without me.<br />
<br />
I see them occasionally, and he looks so happy. They all do. And here I am—a lonely, old, miserable woman who allowed her selfish pride and foolish stubbornness to ruin her life.<br />
<br />
Unfaithfulness is wrong. Revenge is bad. But the worst part of all is that, without forgiveness, bitterness is all that is left.<br />
<br />
The state of your heart dictates whether you harbor a grudge or give grace, seek self-pity or seek Christ, drink human misery or taste God’s mercy.<br />
<br />
No wonder, then, the wise man begs, ‘Above all else, guard your heart.’ David’s prayer should be ours: ‘Create in me a pure heart, O God.’<br />

It wasn’t long before the girls on our team struck up an animated conversation with her (hand gestures and all). It was then that they noticed that there were many scars on her wrist. She said that because of loneliness,…

Loneliness knows no border lines, cultures or nationalities. But neither does God’s redeeming love, His compassion for those who sense they don’t belong, and His own scarred hand outstretched for those of us who have felt loneliness when pain struck.<br />
<br />
Loneliness is the enemy of peace, and the playground of self-pity. David knew this so he ran to the Lord…and we should too, we can also say with conviction in our soul and confidence in our voice: “[God] You keep track of all my sorrows. You have collected all my tears in your bottle.<br />
You have recorded each one in your book. My enemies will retreat when I call to you for help.<br />
This I know: God is on my side! I praise God for what he has promised; Yes, I praise the Lord for what he has promised. I trust in God, so why should I be afraid? (Ps 56:8-12)<br />

The devastation is evident, the threat is fierce and the results shake our lives. Those same reactions rumble in our hearts when facing emotional hurricanes—familiar to so many.<br />
<br />
I’ve survived a few in my lifetime. And the help I received came not from the Federal government, but from the faithful God. He watches the winds howl, the waters of fear gush against us, and the flood of gloom that fills our hearts.<br />
<br />
But great news—His relief is timely, complete and trustworthy. So when weather events…

<br />
I’ve survived a few in my lifetime. And the help I received came not from the Federal government, but from the faithful God. He watches the winds howl, the waters of fear gush against us, and the flood of gloom that fills our hearts.<br />
<br />
But great news—His relief is timely, complete and trustworthy. So when weather events or emotional storms leave us devastated, material things float away, and what we knew is no longer, even then, “Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall trouble or hardship or persecution or famine or nakedness or danger or sword? Neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.” (Romans 8:35 and 39)<br />
<br />
When facing hurricanes of life, we’re not counted as victims but victors because of the divine rescue of His hand. Our hope is in Jesus, our future is in His control, our tomorrows are in His plans and His protection is what resonates in His love for you and for me.<br />

My memories of that date vary a bit from most. On the first anniversary of that horrific event, we buried our 19-year-old son, our youngest of three. The airplane of horror also crashed into our hearts setting flames of anguish to destroy our world.<br />

So, what do we do with the memories, those that haunt our nights and cast shadow of sadness to our days?<br />

So, what do we do with the memories, those that haunt our nights and cast shadow of sadness to our days?<br />
<br />
The answer came to me with softness of dawn when erasing a black night. It wasn’t anything profound, deep or even mystical in the least. It came natural and logical.<br />
The answer was logical because it was spoken by the Creator who knew our tragedies, observed our sorrow, and heard our cries.<br />
<br />
In the still of a moment, He whispered, “…that our present sufferings are not worth comparing with the glory that will be revealed in us.” (Romans 8:18)<br />
<br />
Ah, He doesn’t say when they will be revealed. But I had the answer to that. I caught a glimpse of that glory when I said ‘yes’ to God’s healing. When I recognized my weakness, my inability to face deep pain, too deep for my human comprehension. And I said ‘yes’ to the exchange—my trials for His glory.<br />
<br />
The glory that speaks freedom to a heart bound by sadness, and speaks hope for the one who sees darkness. That glory that is available to you, to me and to those who inhale His divine healing and expel the chains of sorrow.<br />
<br />
The timing for all this varies for you and for me, the degree of healing is also different, but His power to make it possible remains constant, available and free.<br />
<br />
Question for you: Did you say ‘yes’ to the nagging ache? Or ‘yes’ to the glory that begs to be revealed in you?<br />

Will I need to seek that next? A crazy thing happened the other night. I was sound asleep, when a nudge woke me up. It was hubby handing me a glass of water (he keeps one on the nightstand by his side of the bed). Half asleep, I took it and baffled by this bizarre gesture, I wanted to ask for an explanation. But, to my shock, he was sound asleep.<br />

With the glass in my hand, I wondered what to do, trying to figure out what was going on. So, I pulled off the covers, went around the bed and…

But, to my shock, he was sound asleep.<br />

With the glass in my hand, I wondered what to do, trying to figure out what was going on. So, I pulled off the covers, went around the bed and returned it to its place. I just know he won’t believe he did this in his sleep, I thought.<br />
<br />
I was right. The next morning when I told him, he laughed. I didn’t think it was funny.<br />
<br />
Last night, it happened again. He handed me the book he was reading before falling asleep.<br />
Crazy, isn’t it? Hope he won’t start walking in his sleep anytime soon!<br />
<br />
Then it hit me. The enemy does the very same thing. When least expected…even in the middle of the night, he nudges us with negative thoughts, hands us bizarre notions of gloom, taps our shoulder with discouragement. Anyone ever experienced this? Without warning, there he is pushing his way into our thoughts, leaving traces of his ghastly path.<br />
<br />
But there’s no need to be startled, afraid or shocked. Instead, resist the nudge, strike back, and “Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Put on the full armor of God so that you can take your stand against the devil's schemes. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.” (Ephesians 6:9-12.)<br />
<br />
When going to bed, along with your silky PJ’s, also slip on that armor, the protection designed by God to strike back should you feel the enemy’s nudge. He may lurk around, “But the Lord is faithful, and he will strengthen and protect you from the evil one.” (2 Thessalonians 3:3)<br />

Dear praying friends:<br />
<br />
We are writing with heavy hearts asking for urgent prayer. While the USA is in election fever, wars are waging across our planet that our news seems to have no interest in covering. Little has been said of over 3000 Christians who have been burned out of churches and homes just in the last few days since Monday in Orissa, India. The catalyst was the killing of a Hindu extremist leader by Maoist rebels. Police and rebels acknowledged openly who was responsible for the hit, but radical Hindus promptly used the killing to call for mass reprisals on Christians, which in the last few days has far surpassed what did hit the US news on Christmas Day. A Catholic aid worker was burned alive when her orphanage was torched with her in it. Many of you prayed for our BCM pastor Dasarath Digal and his elders who were jailed Christmas Day for murder when a Hindu extremist fell to his death from the roof of their church while tearing down its cross. This morning we received word that Pastor Dasarath's son has been murdered by the Hindu extremists. He has quite young children, so we aren't even sure yet of the boy's age.<br />
<br />
ALL BCM churches in the region are now destroyed, every pastor scattered. We have currently not been able to locate more than one or two of them. After Pastor Jonathan was beaten and left for dead last week, we received word of four more BCM pastors attacked, all by the same radical Hindu group. The police know exactly who is involved, but refuse to arrest them. Pastor Nayak, our area supervisor, is in hiding with his family. He has been listed at the top of a local Hindu hit list. As soon as the curfew lifts we will attempt to smuggle him and his family out before the radicals locate and kill him. We are trying to gather resources to take our remaining pastors and families to Palasas (neighboring to Orissa) where the small BCM church is preparing to receive them. This is the same church that hosted the Orissa pastors conference when Marty met with them there the end of June. We will keep them hidden and safe there temporarily, regroup, and help them recover.<br />
<br />
40,000 Christian schools and colleges across India closed their doors Friday to protest the violence. Representation has been made to both the Indian government to intervene and the US government to speak out for religious freedom. Right now there seems little interest on either end. A curfew has been imposed and police have been given shoot-to-kill authority, but since the state government itself is radical Hindu, they have simply encouraged the mobs.<br />
<br />
At the moment it seems as though all BCM Orissa ministry has been swept away by the violence. But though Satan may think he has won, God IS in control. Churches can be destroyed, but not the Body of Christ. Time and time again our BCM missionaries and pastors have picked up after attacks and insisted on going back to continue speaking God's Word and bearing a Christian witness in their community, as have other Christians as well. In Revelation 3:8-9, Jesus Himself gave witness to another body of believers suffering great persecution, the church of Philadelphia, "I know you have little strength, yet you have kept my word and have not denied my name. I will make those who are of the synagogue of Satan . . . come and fall down at your feet and acknowledge that have loved you."<br />
<br />
In the stronghold of evil forces committed to blotting out any message of God's love in India, please pray together with us for these brave, dear brothers and sisters in the body of Christ. Scripture tells us that when one part of the Body in Christ suffers, every part suffers. Right now part of our body is in deep pain, and our own hearts ache deeply with these wonderful people we have come to know and love. Pray that they will truly experience God's love holding them close in the midst of man's hate. Pray for wisdom to know what to do next, and for resources to cover basic safety and life necessities. And above all, pray for Pastor Dasarath's family who after enduring the six months he spent in jail are now grieving the murder of their son.<br />

What if you and I made this commitment – are you game? Ready? Raise your right hand and repeat:<br />

“I will not let myself rest. I will not let my eyes sleep nor close my eyelids in slumber until I find a place to build a house for the Lord, a sanctuary for the Mighty One of Israel” (Ps. 132:3-6).<br />
<br />
What a pledge, huh? If you and I committed to build a place in our heart, our life, and our home a place where we can run to when life piles on us, when tasks pour down like sleet, when demands jab at…

Then we can run to that place of peace reserved only for us and God. The place where we can spill our thoughts of stress and fear.<br />
<br />
But where would that place be? It might require remodeling your heart, to make an addition, or even section off an existing room. Wherever it is, God urges us not to rest, not to close our eyes until we have that place set off specifically for Him, only Him and for Him.<br />
<br />
I ran to that place recently. My bone density test results revealed no improvement…I’m still in the “red” according the tech—not good news at my young age. I liked that part “for my young age.”<br />
<br />
But like most of you, I don’t like to hear negative news regarding my health. So, what I did was to emotionally run to that place where God whispers, “It will be okay, I’m in control. And good news—I knew the results before you did. You do your best, and leave it all up to me.”<br />
<br />
What a wonderful place of refuge, of security and comfort. Any time, any season, night or day because indeed, “He who watches over Israel never slumbers or sleeps. The Lord himself watches over you! The Lord stands beside you as your protective shade. The sun will not harm you by day, nor the moon at night” (Ps. 121:4-122:1).<br />
<br />
Maybe your bones are strong, but something else in your life is losing strength…I invite you to run to that place. His hand is at work, His healing awaits, and the diagnosis He gives is superior to that of any doctor or tech.<br />

Long ago, when I had to interpret those words, a myriad of feelings slid through my head. What could possibly drive someone to utter that gloomy phrase? Are there events that pile up in such a way that you reach the end and all that’s left is hate?<br />
<br />
I’ve had days where bad news stomped in like muddy shoes on a clean floor. We don’t expect it, and aren’t ever prepared. You probably have been there. The routine, the details of daily life follow through uneventfully. Until a phone call, a…
Long ago, when I had to interpret those words, a myriad of feelings slid through my head. What could possibly drive someone to utter that gloomy phrase? Are there events that pile up in such a way that you reach the end and all that’s left is hate?<br />
<br />
I’ve had days where bad news stomped in like muddy shoes on a clean floor. We don’t expect it, and aren’t ever prepared. You probably have been there. The routine, the details of daily life follow through uneventfully. Until a phone call, a diagnosis from a doctor, the negative response from the finance institution, the teenager who’s still deaf to reason, and a spouse who is blind to your ways—they all place a black mark of murk on the sunshine of our days.<br />
<br />
From annoying to downright disturbing—that’s the range of ugliness that can waltz into our life.<br />
But do you think God didn’t know this about us? About our situation? About our crazy life and the insane demands we place on ourselves?<br />
<br />
Sure, He knew. He knew we’d be taxed and bent, but He didn’t leave us with our feelings ricocheting inside us. Instead, He said pretty much…it will be okay, it will be fine because “…We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed” (2 Corinthians 4:8-9).<br />
<br />
Don’t you love the level of endurance we have in Christ? Left to our own we’d be destroyed, crushed, and defeated. But instead, we have someone beyond us, above our troubles, greater than our pain…His grace, power, and might.<br />
<br />
So, if you’re disgusted by your situation or your dilemma, I invite you to shed the feeling of helplessness and grab His promise that we would never, never, never be abandoned, in despair, or destroyed.<br />

I should say stupid things "I" do. “Can’t find my cell phone,” hubby murmured as he paced from room to room.<br />
<br />
“Where did you use it last?” I asked, as I picked up the home phone to dial his cell—a tried and true way to find lost cell phones these days. But no luck.<br />
<br />
We did a mental trace of the places it could be. The next morning, still discussing the possible spots where he might have left it, we hopped in the car and headed to church. We looked under the seats, in the console, around the…

<br />
We did a mental trace of the places it could be. The next morning, still discussing the possible spots where he might have left it, we hopped in the car and headed to church. We looked under the seats, in the console, around the console. No phone.<br />
<br />
I grabbed my cell and began calling the places we’d gone the night before—the theatre, the restaurant, our friend’s car who drove us. No one had seen it. I dialed his cell one more time just in case. Nothing.<br />
<br />
Hubby’s impending business trip to the West coast added a bit of urgency to locate it since it contained important phone numbers.<br />
<br />
Sigh. A bit frustrated, I closed the flap of my cell. We pulled in the parking lot at church, I slipped out of my seat, and before Hubby closed the passenger door, he gave a light chuckle, “Here it is.”<br />
<br />
What? Sure enough, he found it on my seat. I’d been sitting on it the whole time.<br />
<br />
Blushing, I have to admit that lately I’ve been also looking for something that is necessary and often lost—confidence. I’d had a misunderstanding with a friend and in order to resolve it I had to gather confidence to have the right words—honest yet firm, diplomatic yet direct, tactful yet clear.<br />
<br />
So I looked and looked in me and scrambled for the dose of confidence needed to accomplish such a task. And I became flustered when looking for it in my limited abilities and somewhat resourceful self. Realizing it wasn’t enough, tension built.<br />
<br />
From now on, when facing the war of stress, anxiety, tension, and fear, I go to the source of all confidence and echo David’s words: “The Lord is my light and my salvation, whom should I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life. Of whom should I be afraid? If an army raise up against me, my heart will not fear. Though war break out against me, even then will I be confident” (Psalm 27:1).<br />
<br />
“This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us. And if we know that he hears us—whatever we ask—we know that we have what we asked of him” (1 John 5:14-15).<br />
<br />
Confidence is in the asking, reassurance is in the believing, and the results are in His promising that He will deliver. So if you misplaced that important confidence…no need to fret, it’s closer than you think.<br />

Like dangerous intruders, tropical storms, often a prelude to hurricanes, still dance outside in some parts of Florida. That eerie feeling washes over me. I can’t help it. My mind works overtime at the sounds outside—the whistling, the roaring, and the drops of rain as they pelt against the window—a monster outside—one that stalks our senses.<br />
<br />
Each sound stirred memories of past hurricanes. But more devastating, the reminder that the darkest of stalkers roams around even during sunny days,…

We all know him. I’ve sensed his presence and felt his attacks when least expected.<br />

He knows when to strike—he whistles insecurity when things don’t go my way, he groans discouragement when setbacks of life barge in, he mocks with laughter when distressing situations rattle my life.<br />
<br />
The enemy, armed with his lies and crafty schemes is outside slamming against us hoping to break through.<br />
<br />
But you and I bought insurance against those attacks. Alert and diligent we put in a claim for what we know is true, what is safe, what is secure, and what withstands any stalker, evil or threat.<br />
<br />
The policy of God’s grace never expires and the benefits are comprehensive, promising full coverage for all.<br />
<br />
How about if during this storm, rather than succumb to fear, angst or fret, you try to “Be self-controlled and alert. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. Resist him, standing firm in the faith, because you know that your brothers throughout the world are undergoing the same kind of sufferings. And the God of all grace, who called you to his eternal glory in Christ, after you have suffered a little while, will himself restore you and make you strong, firm and steadfast.” (1 Peter 5:8-11)<br />
<br />
Did you read that? “Resist him.” That’s what we do best when we use God’s weapons—His promise and His confidence.<br />
<br />
Praying you stand in victory against storms, gain confidence when attacked and stand firm and strong under the triumph of His grace.<br />

Been there, done that. I’m sure all of us in Florida echo the same. But how do you really prepare? Water, candles, flashlights, canned food all line up just in case.<br />
<br />
But preparing emotionally is something totally different. The aftermath of Charley, Ivan and Jeanne stir ugly memories. Yet in the midst of weather reports, announcers’ warnings, pointing out potential dangers, and making suggestions, thoughts still wander to the “what if.”<br />
<br />
Those are our human reactions, results of our limited…

<br />
But preparing emotionally is something totally different. The aftermath of Charley, Ivan and Jeanne stir ugly memories. Yet in the midst of weather reports, announcers’ warnings, pointing out potential dangers, and making suggestions, thoughts still wander to the “what if.”<br />
<br />
Those are our human reactions, results of our limited perception and short-sighted view of our surroundings. Here’s a better view, more accurate and a thousand times more trustworthy: “Do not let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God; trust also in me.” (John 14:1 NIV)<br />
<br />
And while the storm approaches, “Steep your life in God-reality, God-initiative, and God-provisions. Don’t worry about missing out. You’ll find all your everyday human concerns will be met. Give your entire attention to what God is doing right now, and don’t get worked up about what may or may not happen tomorrow. God will help you deal with whatever hard things come up when the time comes.” (Matt 6:33-34, The Message)<br />
<br />
Hmm…what’s God doing right now? I dare suggest He’s calling out His comfort as the rain begins to pour, His reassurance while the skies turn darker still, and the promise of His protection while gusty winds begin to lash against windows and doors.<br />
<br />
We’ll wait for the hurricane together and, united under the shadow of His wings, trust that calmness will follow the storm.<br />

Some people want to know that very thing. We all want to accomplish something, meet a goal, and delight in the victory when reaching that milestone. Maybe yours is in fact, to write and publish a book.<br />
<br />
But that desire never visited my thoughts. Once I lost my sight, I kept my eyes on Jesus, the one who gave me a new vision.<br />
<br />
And one day I sat at the computer and, with the aid of a special voice synthesizer that reads the screen, my fingers danced on the keyboard. I wanted to jot the details of…
Some people want to know that very thing. We all want to accomplish something, meet a goal, and delight in the victory when reaching that milestone. Maybe yours is in fact, to write and publish a book.<br />
<br />
But that desire never visited my thoughts. Once I lost my sight, I kept my eyes on Jesus, the one who gave me a new vision.<br />
<br />
And one day I sat at the computer and, with the aid of a special voice synthesizer that reads the screen, my fingers danced on the keyboard. I wanted to jot the details of my story for my grandchildren. That’s all, just for them.<br />
<br />
But the story kept growing. Details poured from my heart, long-ago episodes jostled through my memory, and the evident healing of pain and heartache that seared my heart shimmered through the pages.<br />
<br />
A book? Why not, I thought. So I divided it into chapters. After months and months of rewriting, I crafted the last chapter.<br />
<br />
Then I gulped big and sheepishly handed it to hubby. I waited, wondered, and wished for his approval.<br />
<br />
“Pretty good,” he said. But with heart drumming, I braced for the real response. Not sure what that would be because in Chapter 7 I relate the stinging infidelity that rattled our marriage.<br />
<br />
“If it would help another married couple, I think we should include it,” he said.<br />
Inside, I let out a squeal of joy because by then I had asked the Lord to put his blessing on my writing, anoint my story, and take it to where He saw it fit.<br />
<br />
He did. To my delight and awe the book is still selling after four years in print. And surprises still sprinkle from time to time. I just learned a company bought 100 copies to offer it among other high-ranking books, folks in Brazil translated it into Portuguese, and it sold through Europe as well.<br />
<br />
Looking back, what I’d done was one thing and one thing only—I allowed gratitude for God’s healing to fuel my desire to write. Not write a book actually, just string words together to illustrate how God’s hand brushed His triumph through human trials.<br />
<br />
I smile with appreciation for my blindness, His comfort after the tragedy of my son because all that helped me to see the world, my life, eternity and each moment with different eyes.<br />
<br />
That story I titled, <i>Trials of Today, Treasures for Tomorrow</i>, (meant only for my grandchildren) changed lives—so write some of my readers.<br />
<br />
Sigh. So that’s what happens when one seeks God first, situations don’t matter—blind, deaf, unable to walk, to speak or dance—seeing Him first opens doors to surprises beyond our imagination. “Seek first the Kingdom of God and His righteousness and all these things will be added onto you” (Matthew 6:33).<br />
<br />
I invite you to open your arms. He’s ready to add all those things—pour blessings, open doors, and usher triumph and success.<br />

Don’t you love the excitement, the anticipation and the thrill of watching the United States team move toward the finish line?<br />
<br />
No different for you and me—we dash off to the next task, next goal, next milestone, next achievement. Phew! But when we get there, a gold medal isn’t dangling from a silk…

But when we get there, a gold medal isn’t dangling from a silk ribbon, nor does any applause flood the scene, not even a bit of cheering sounds anywhere. Instead, disappointment scratches our senses, and we wonder if we have energy for the next race.<br />
<br />
I found the answer a long time ago. The race track we choose is what makes all the difference—running for the things of the world will drain our energy and eventually frustration will blot out our excitement. But while competing in the spiritual Olympics, we run on the divine track paved with His Word, focused on what He directs, listening to His coaching, and His cheering us to keep on going and keep on trusting. And with all we have, we dash toward the strong tower that God has prepared, toward His safe arms, and toward the gold medal of peace and reassurance. The finish line is not the end, but the beginning of a life of confidence leading to victory at every turn.<br />
<br />
“The name of Jehovah is a strong tower; the righteous run into it, and are safe” (Proverbs 18:10).<br />
<br />
Praying you call out His name and sprint toward His Tower where it’s safe and secure.<br />

European Tours You Can't Pass Up

Sounds inviting, doesn’t it? I was a bit envious when a friend related her recent European tour. She described some delightful details. But the best part was that this great escapade was her husband’s surprise birthday gift. “The only thing is,” she said, “was that the trips from city to city required long bus rides.”<br />
<br />
I know the feeling. The few times I rode in a bus going from point A to point B were endless, boring, hugely monotonous, and fatiguing. I could say I don’t know why, but I do…
Sounds inviting, doesn’t it? I was a bit envious when a friend related her recent European tour. She described some delightful details. But the best part was that this great escapade was her husband’s surprise birthday gift. “The only thing is,” she said, “was that the trips from city to city required long bus rides.”<br />
<br />
I know the feeling. The few times I rode in a bus going from point A to point B were endless, boring, hugely monotonous, and fatiguing. I could say I don’t know why, but I do know—unable to see the scenery out the windows, the humming of the engine quickly grew so incredibly dull, completely tedious actually.<br />
<br />
But, I figured out the solution. As always, when the eyes don’t work, the hearing compensates quite nicely. I’ll slip my earphones on and settle on the seat to listen to my favorite books. Then the trip takes on a new experience—bearable, pleasant, and even enjoyable. The focus changes and each stop along the road brings renewed enthusiasm knowing the destination is getting closer.<br />
<br />
No different was my journey on the bus of suffering chugging along to find the destination called “peace.” I’d embarked hoping it would be a short ride, quick, and uneventful. Not so. The ride proved fatiguing at times, anxiety hovering about, impatience jabbed at me, and the coveted destination seemed farther than I was willing to accept.<br />
<br />
What saved me once again was my hearing—listening to God’s Word, cheering me on, offering spiritual nourishment along the way, producing in me fuel for the journey.<br />
<br />
Paul must have ridden the same bus through Europe and tons of other places. As he suffered through it all, he journaled: “And we rejoice in the hope of the glory of God. Not only so, but we also rejoice in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope. And hope does not disappoint us, because God has poured out his love into our hearts by the Holy Spirit, whom he has given us” (Romans 5:2-5).<br />
<br />
At this very moment, you might be on that bus, humming along the road of anticipation—expecting, waiting for that something, that someone to come along, that situation to be resolved, or that next step to be taken. The journey might seem dreadful but, I invite you to take a sip of Paul’s advice, a bite of endurance, and a long gulp of God’s promise. Brush off that fretting, toss out worry and shrug off fear of the rough turns. The destination is on the horizon—the flag of victory awaits. And once there, you can wave it high in the air. Peace now abounds and best of all, your character shines rich with diligent perseverance, ability to endure, and with a wealth of abundant hope to equip you for the next journey.<br />
<br />
One last thought: While we focus on the altitude of the destination, God watches our attitude during the journey.<br />

Help for the blind...

<br />
But the best help anyone has given me after I lost my sight came from two friends who took me into a Christian church. In the midst of sobs that expressed my misery, I blinked my tears away to see God for the first time. My heart opened wide to get a glimpse of His love, and like never before, I saw the traces of His compassion as He stooped and lifted me up, brushing off sadness and hopelessness that had dirtied my world.<br />
<br />
But it was this past Saturday night when those thoughts flooded my heart. There I was, seated at a table in a ballroom, decorated with Bolivian items. My parents sat to one side and some friends across from us. The event was created to celebrate Bolivia’s independence day (August 6th). My parents enjoy the music, the food as much as I do. But when the program started, the loud, rhythm of the familiar Bolivian tunes reverberated through the walls of the room and also of my heart. I was taken back to my days when I could see. To the time when I was awed by the bright colored costumes, the elaborate design, and the fancy adornments that made the dances look majestic.<br />
<br />
For one moment, the urge to see, just for a second, or a fraction of a second washed through me. But with the next breath, I realized the shallow echo of such request. Of course I’d like to see again, but when I ponder on the vision God has given me after my sight closed in, I inhale deep the wonder if that very miracle.<br />
<br />
Remember this story? “A blind man, Bartimaeus (that is, the Son of Timaeus), was sitting by the roadside begging. When he heard that it was Jesus of Nazareth, he began to shout, ‘Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!’ Many rebuked him and told him to be quiet, but he shouted all the more, ‘Son of David, have mercy on me!’<br />
<br />
“Jesus stopped and said, ‘Call him.’ So they called to the blind man, ‘Cheer up! On your feet! He’s calling you.’ Throwing his cloak aside, he jumped to his feet and came to Jesus. ‘What do you want me to do for you?’ Jesus asked him. The blind man said, ‘Rabbi, I want to see.’<br />
<br />
“‘Go,’ said Jesus, ‘your faith has healed you.’ Immediately he received his sight and followed Jesus along the road” (Mark 10:47-52).<br />
<br />
God, who knows the perfect gift for us all, granted me the gift better than the man in the story. He granted me the eyes to see His hand as He ushers me from day to day, The words of reassurance that dance through my heart, the joy that adds color to my world, and the beat of His comfort that takes me effortlessly from moment to moment.<br />
<br />
And through it all, I learned that the eyes of the soul see what the world looks for.<br />

Is there protection against California's earthquakes?

The earth did quake a few days ago. Although I was in my home in Florida, I heard its impact as it shook. I happened to be interpreting for a client and her patient located in a city in California. The conversation was calm and polite. Then their voices choked, then paused, gasps filled the air. And then the word “earthquake” echoed through the phone line.<br />
<br />
How quickly, how abruptly their focus was redirected, the emotions shifted and tone changed—from friendly to frightened.<br />
<br />
Is that how it…
The earth did quake a few days ago. Although I was in my home in Florida, I heard its impact as it shook. I happened to be interpreting for a client and her patient located in a city in California. The conversation was calm and polite. Then their voices choked, then paused, gasps filled the air. And then the word “earthquake” echoed through the phone line.<br />
<br />
How quickly, how abruptly their focus was redirected, the emotions shifted and tone changed—from friendly to frightened.<br />
<br />
Is that how it will be when the Lord comes? We’ll be doing our own thing, following our routine, checking off to-do lists, planning our agenda, rushing off to the next activity. When suddenly, all will change because we may not only feel a huge motion, but a trumpet sound…and I can only imagine what will race through our minds.<br />
<br />
California’s earthquake wasn’t the first, nor will it be the last. But when Jesus comes, it will only be one time for us to know He is here, in His glory, in His splendor and majesty.<br />
<br />
The two people with whom I spoke on the few seconds of the earthquake didn’t expect it nor were they prepared. Hmm…that sparked a sobering reminder…am I prepared for His coming—today, next week, next month…or the very next second.<br />
<br />
But the time isn’t important, what’s crucial is whether our soul is repented, our thoughts clean and our lives reflect Christ’s love.<br />
<br />
Goodness, who can manage that! I wonder if I’d accomplish all that when I face Jesus. But relief comes knowing His forgiveness encompasses all sins, His mercy is new every morning, and His Word to guide us is relevant each second of each day.<br />
<br />
And best news of all is that God doesn’t expect perfection but He does instruct diligent progress, genuine effort, and willingness to be transformed. Changed from the old ways to His, from what feels good enough, to strive for excellence. And most of all from “doing” to “being”—His children, confident, secure and committed.<br />
<br />
Here’s Paul’s way to put it—a bit bold, but direct and clear: “Now concerning how and when all this will happen, dear brothers and sisters, we don’t really need to write you. For you know quite well that the day of the Lord's return will come unexpectedly, like a thief in the night. When people are saying, ‘Everything is peaceful and secure,’ then disaster will fall on them as suddenly as a pregnant woman's labor pains begin. And there will be no escape.<br />
<br />
But you aren’t in the dark about these things, dear brothers and sisters, and you won’t be surprised when the day of the Lord comes like a thief. For you are all children of the light and of the day; we don’t belong to darkness and night. So be on your guard, not asleep like the others. Stay alert and be clearheaded. Night is the time when people sleep and drinkers get drunk. But let us who live in the light be clearheaded, protected by the armor of faith and love, and wearing as our helmet the confidence of our salvation” (1 Thessalonians 5:1-9).<br />
<br />
Got your helmet on? If so, earthquakes, storms or hurricanes may cause our land to tremble, but nothing can shake our soul.<br />

How to find the right woman...and at the right time.

I just got back from a delightful trip to Dallas, where hearts are big and folks are reeeeal friendly.<br />
<br />
Among the highlights, I heard a story told by a dear friend. It touched me so much I thought I’d share it with you.<br />
<br />
Years back, he happened to be driving on a road, late at night, out in the country--no lights, no sign of life, no nothing. In the midst of total darkness, he heard that familiar beep. The beep that indicated his cell phone just went out of rang. That strange feeling you’ve…
I just got back from a delightful trip to Dallas, where hearts are big and folks are reeeeal friendly.<br />
<br />
Among the highlights, I heard a story told by a dear friend. It touched me so much I thought I’d share it with you.<br />
<br />
Years back, he happened to be driving on a road, late at night, out in the country--no lights, no sign of life, no nothing. In the midst of total darkness, he heard that familiar beep. The beep that indicated his cell phone just went out of rang. That strange feeling you’ve suddenly lost connection with the world filtered through.<br />
<br />
His thoughts wondered at the possibility should anything happen, he’d have no way to reach anyone. Scary thought. But more frightening still was the reality that even if his cell phone worked, he’d really have no one he could call—no one who cared or loved him enough to respond.<br />
<br />
The reality suddenly was darker than the surroundings—he had no one to share his life with. He’d focused on success, on climbing the corporate ladder. He’d won victory at every turn in his career as an illustrious business man. He’d reached prosperity and achieved success, one reserved only for those with unique wisdom and skill.<br />
<br />
But as he rode on that curvy, dark path, he vowed a change. He set goals to find that special someone who would fill his life with meaning, fulfillment and happiness.<br />
<br />
It was that beep that rang the alarm to change his goals, rethink his path, and restore what was truly important.<br />
<br />
Eventually he found the right woman, the love of his life, the jewel that lights his path. And once married, they both followed the journey to the light of the world—Jesus.Their life is now dedicated to serve Christ—in ministry and by example.<br />
<br />
Sweet story, isn’t it? Too sweet to be true. But it is. And it’s powerful because that same beep is sounding off for tons of folks in all walks of life—the beep that says, there’s something better, more radiant, life-giving and eternal—a life in Christ.<br />
<br />
No matter the darkness of the road, the curves it might take, the misguided goals to worldly prosperity— that beep will sound sooner or later. Either we ignore it or choose to reconnect with the one who knows every turn. He knew it from the beginning and also knew those who would end up in darkness and those who would come to the light. He shines the sign big and bold that says, “I am the way, the truth and the life” (John 14:6).<br />
<br />
Should you be on that dark, lonely road, the beep is sounding, the alarm has gone of,f and the call is ringing to re-direct, to change, and to return to the one who dispels loneliness, ushers satisfaction, and shines purpose for the journey.<br />

My mom was watching this program, enjoying it to the max. And I wonder what the thrill is. Is it the surprise element? The fact they took a simple, ordinary activity of taking a cab and turned it into an exciting adventure? Or is it simply the potential to gain cash that stirs excitement?<br />

I'd love to ride in a cab, answer questions the correct way, and relish with the winnings. I have a suspicion I’ll have that very chance. Only it won’t be a cab driver, but Christ who will search for answers. The one decisive question will be, “Did you know me?”<br />
<br />
That’s when we’ll all inhale deep and do a fast rewind of our life to answer correctly. We’d be wise to take note of His expectations. In the book of Matthew. He says it plainly: “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only he who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. Many will say to me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name and in your name drive out demons and perform many miracles?’ Then I will tell them plainly, ‘I never knew you. Away from me, you evildoers!’”<br />
<br />
God is merciful, but direct. He shows the way but is also patient. He’s compassionate but also rebukes disobedience. He’s all powerful yet tenderhearted to those with a contrite heart. Most know all these characteristics…but do we know Him?<br />
<br />

I was shocked when a sweet friend shared that she had at one time been a guard at a women’s prison. The job was rough, the demands stringent, and the circumstances often mirrored a nightmare. But armed with her gun, a sense of security must have eased her tension.<br />
<br />
Her instructions were to shoot, no reservations, no hesitation…just fire should she see any inmate display even a slight attempt to escape.<br />
<br />
She learned how, she was trained, she had practiced. But when the time came to do it…she froze. That’s when reality struck; she lacked the guts to pull that trigger. Her days as a prison guard came to an end.<br />
<br />
And now, she teaches about her job as a Christian. As the prison guard, she had to carry a gun at all times. Now, she carries in her heart a better protector, a more powerful force to guard against all evil—physical or spiritual. She holds on to Christ, and clings to His power great enough to stop the felons who lurk to rob our peace and security.<br />
<br />
Crime increases day by day. Our home owners association is always on the look-out for suspicious action and alerts the neighborhood. My friend learned to use a gun. I wouldn’t think of it. Instead, I learned to use caution, and remain connected to the security system that is plugged to the divine help: “I will bless the Lord who guides me; even at night my heart instructs me. I know the Lord is always with me. I will not be shaken, for he is right beside me. No wonder my heart is glad, and I rejoice” (Psalm 16:7-10).<br />
<br />
What causes you to freeze when fear strikes? Are your nights peaceful, resting in the security of His love, His protection and His mighty power to defend you from all enemies?<br />
<br />
Your soul will rejoice when you inhale His presence, take in His protective love, and sense His warm comfort.<br />

This thought is fresh in my mind as two friends and I visited EPCOT this past week. Goodness those lines! When I learned a 70-minute wait was on the horizon, thoughts immediately raced through my head—the myriad of tasks I could accomplish during those same minutes. The temptation is pulsating…you know what I mean…find a reason to get at the front of the line, beat the system, or come up with an excuse to get ahead of those hundreds of people. Anything to bypass that waiting period. But in reality that won’t happen.<br />
<br />
Having no option, we waited, entertained by the games Disney so cleverly provides to make the wait bearable.<br />
<br />
But here's the deal. Waiting is not reserved to theme parks. That same waiting stage fills our lives all the time. When we wait for God’s move in our lives, do we wait patiently? Do we trust to be entertained by the wonder of what He’s doing right this minute?<br />
<br />
If you’re like me, I get eager, a bit unlady-like aggressive and shedding any trace of patience, I press forward. And out of breath, when I reach the destination, the disappointment tastes pretty yucky. Rushing ahead of God is as intelligent as eating pizza dough before baking it.<br />
<br />
As He ushers us through stages, He reserves information, insights, doors that only He will open—all in His perfect timing. He puts it plainly, “It is not for you to know the times or dates the Father has set by His own authority” (Acts 1:7, NIV).<br />
<br />
His authority, not my intuition. His will, not my wants. And His plans not my agenda.<br />
My friend Kris puts this beautifully:<br />

Lord, bless me with the strength to wait on You, as your timing is perfect. Ease my impatience and encourage me to trust You in all things. Discourage me from racing ahead of You in an attempt to fulfill the plans I have made, according to my timetable...<br />
<br />
Father, I ask that You hold my hand as we patiently wait together for Your Plans to unfold - In Your time, not mine...In Jesus' name I pray. Amen.<br />

That’s what characterizes our dishes from Bolivia. But one trait that I shake my head about is the way it’s served.<br />
<br />
Contrary to American style, each person is served a full plate. The Hostess scoop a portion of each item on a plate and carries it to the table, placing it before each guest.<br />
<br />
This past Friday, my Dad’s brothers arrived from Bolivia for a short visit. And as part of the cultural tradition, my mom insists in serving everyone Bolivian style.<br />
<br />
“Let them all get what they want,” I…
That’s what characterizes our dishes from Bolivia. But one trait that I shake my head about is the way it’s served.<br />
<br />

<br />
This past Friday, my Dad’s brothers arrived from Bolivia for a short visit. And as part of the cultural tradition, my mom insists in serving everyone Bolivian style.<br />
<br />
“Let them all get what they want,” I suggested.<br />
<br />
With spoon in hand, my Mom does her thing. “No, no. If I do it that way, I know they won’t help themselves as they should. They’re too shy and will only take a little bit.” She follows her routine of scooping mounds of vegetables, potatoes and slices of meat, arranging all items on each plate.<br />
<br />
Hmm…so she knows what they’ll like, how much and from which items on the menu? If you asked her if that’s so, she’d give a resounding ‘yes.’<br />
<br />
But what also characterizes our meals is the items placed at the center of the table-- the basket of bread and the hot sauce. Its potency equals that of the deliciously hot Asian Wasabi. Eaten by itself, it can clear sinuses for a couple of years. But when blended with other foods, the flavor makes our taste buds do the Cha Cha Cha.<br />
<br />
Mom knows what our guests prefer...and the Lord knows what we need. While she dishes out the indicated portion, the Lord is also spooning out exactly what our soul craves for the day; He’s placed the amount of strength, of endurance and of peace to fill the craving that can churn inside us.<br />
<br />
And at the center of the table of life, we find a small dish of challenges, disappointments, or difficulties. Often they burn and leave a stinging sensation in our heart.<br />
<br />
But when blended with the faithfulness and power of His Word, they enhance our life and bring a new flavor to our day, strength for our moments and hope for things to come.<br />
<br />
If your soul is craving for a dish of peace flavored with security, the divine table of His love is set. He spooned the exact portion to meet all your needs. He’s the perfect chef, divine and able to give second and third servings of hope…"The Lord is my portion," says my soul, "Therefore I hope in Him!" (Lam 3:24-25).<br />

I got a call from a friend. That’s all she said. What is the natural question when someone tells you that? You want to know why. So I asked, but she said she didn’t know.<br />
<br />
Did you ever feel that way? You just experienced a great event in your life, or enjoyed a great thing…and when it’s over, sadness with gloom invade your heart.<br />
<br />
But God knows. He sees our moods, our disappointments, and our hum drum routine. So He gave us the answer: each day has a new dawn of possibilities, each day ushers…

Today I once again stand in awe at the privilege of living in independence, saluting the flag, becoming citizens, pledging allegiance to the United States of America—all gifts we still treasure. We received them when my family and I became naturalized citizens of the United States, the most powerful country in the world.<br />
<br />
But its power, prosperity and prestige came with a price. A cost that spills to the family of courageous soldiers, their sacrifice and yes, that of their loved ones.<br />
<br />

“Sand blew across the parking lot. It seemed we had found the edge of the world; but for our oldest son, Nathan and the other Marines stationed there, the colorless landscape of 29 Palms was home. Each company; dressed in desert camouflaged, lined up for roll call. Their gear was packed. Within a few hours they would be leaving for Afghanistan.<br />
<br />
Their recent training had been as intense as the blazing sun they would soon be facing on foreign soil. Those of us who made the trip to see our loved ones gathered on the hot pavement. An older well-wisher wore a white baseball cap with ‘Korean Veteran’ embroidered on the front. The faded tattoo on his forearm was so blurred it was hard to tell exactly what the original design had been. A weathered hand wiped away the tear that had escaped against his will. He remembered the taste; the sight and sounds of war; and wished he was young enough to go with his grandson and the men he now saluted.<br />
<br />
A young woman rested her hand on the side of her rounded stomach. Her husband won’t be home for the delivery. Other young wives had been down this long good-bye road before; it was never easy.<br />
<br />
Our children watched as their older brother stood at attention waiting for his name to be barked out during the final roll call. John, my husband, understood the routine. He was one of the ‘Semper Fi’ and had deployed, but never into battle. This was all new for me. My stomach hurt; I couldn’t breathe. My mind was filled with things I wanted to say but the only words that managed to tumble out were ‘I love you.”’ It would be a long eight months.<br />
<br />
‘These are the faces of war that the media often misses; not just those who serve; but the families that stay home and wait; watch and worry,’ I thought. Each Marine responded to his name. There was a somber reality that many of us felt; but no one dared utter. Not all those who answered the roll call will be coming home alive. I hope it’s not my son, I fervently wished. I knew that the mom on either side of me was wishing the same thing. You don’t want it to be anyone’s son, or grandson, nephew; brother or husband. But the reality is that freedom has a price<br />
<br />
That price was realized when John clicked onto the internet. The news was numbing. Four soldiers of the 2/7 Marines had been killed and the names had not been released. Anxiety mixed with fear every time the phone rang. Forty-eight hours later we received an e-mail from Nathan. He was fine. By the end of that week; a total of seven Marines from 2/7 were killed. Our hearts broke for those who had lost their son’s.<br />
<br />
Having a child in the military is not easy; but I know that Mothers have worried for their sons at war from the very beginning of our country. If it weren’t for the sacrifice of others, we would not be waving flags of red white and blue, watching fireworks, or lining up along parade routes.<br />
<br />
The real celebration for our family will be when Nathan and those in the 2/7 are back in the USA. When the bus full of exhausted Marines, anxious for a familiar embrace and the promise of a home cooked meal pulls into the depot, we will be there - at the edge of the world on soil that is still free.”<br />
