Some Victorian sayins to do with cats.

This week’s historical trivia unashamedly looks at Victorian sayings that involve cats.

If a thief talked about a ‘Cat’, the chances are he wasn’t referring to our feline friends but a lady’s muff. Similarly if he mentioned ‘Freeing a cat,’ best hold on tight to your possessions, because he was about to steal something.

Please could I politely ask anyone who hasn't yet voted to vote for my nominations and perhaps secure Glastonbury's place and maybe push Requiem for the Ripper up to the top slot? Author Success Story: Article Marketing and Blogging

Gail Tern, author of Cure Arthritis: The Ultimate 7-Day Natural Remedy for Arthritis, Gout, and Rheumatism, sent me an email recently where she talked about how she came to write her book and the actions she's has taken so far to promote her book. I thought you'd find her story interesting:

I suffered from a form of arthritis called osteoarthritis. Due to the failure of conventional medicine to remedy my condition, I sought out other treatments. Over… Continue

Author Success Story: Banner Ads in Email Newsletters Sell Books

William Meers, author of Bye-Bye Big Brother, hooked up with Arcamax.com to place banner ads in their ezines. He received good exposure for his book from these ads and was able to get a good return on his investment. As he noted:

The real trick was designing the banner ad and running split tests to get the best click through rate to my book site at http://www.byebyebookset.com. My advice is to stick with what… Continue

W.E.B. Griffin The Outsiders: A Presidential Agent Novel

For those not keeping up with the series or those of you who have possibly lost track for whatever reason, this is number six in the series. Yes, I have read them all and yes, I have also enjoyed them all. Did I enjoy this one as much as the others? No not as much, but I am a fan of the character and W.E.B. Griffin. Here is what Charlie has against him this time:

“Charlie Castillo's secret unit has been disbanded-but that doesn't mean he's out of business. As experience has painfully…

A Book That Inspires Acts of Kindness in Children

Review by Lauren S. Smith

The Thanksgiving Coat: Inspire Acts of Kindness, Happiness and Healing, written by Elizabeth Hoadley and illustrated byher talented 5-year daughter, Kailee, is a fine example of what level that teaching and learning can rise to.

This inspiring and motivational children's book is based on a true story that began with Kailee's visit with her mother to a food bank to…

Author community

Surfing the web I find an amazing amount of writers who do their utmost to promote their books.l I am so impressed by their willingness to do this grunt work. They blog, they Facebook, they Twitter. the go to seminars, do readings, appear at county fairs, grocery stores, almost any venue that will take them.

Their undustry is awesome. I commend them for their hard work and for their efforts.

I try to do this kind of thing, but my efforts are feeble. for example, this…

Bushwhacker Museum, Nevada, Mo. & Civil War books

I just finished reading The Saber and the Ring by Patrick Brophy (ISBN 1893046168). The proceeds of his books go to the Bushwhacker Museum in Nevada, Missouri to help with expenses. Mr. Brophy had a love for words and a pride in being able to put those words into articles and books about a subject he knew well which was his birthplace, Vernon County, and its history, the Civil War.

My father used to tell his children stories about the Civil War, but I must confess I paid very little… Continue

Stephen Hunter Dead Zero

I love to find new stuff to read and this Bob Lee Swagger novel rocked. This was my first read on a Stephen Hunter novel and I liked everything about it. Today I want to include two things in this post about the novel, the synopsis and also some text from the novel to give you a little flav of Bob Lee if this is the first read for you on this character. Here we go, a little of what is between the covers first:

“Bob Lee Swagger tracks down an AWOL Marine sniper who resurfaces to…

Science Fiction Freedom

Everyone knows that writers are story tellers.  It’s our job to paint vivid pictures of what we see inside our minds.  This is especially true when it comes to writing science fiction because what we see in many cases are images conjured up from the imagination then translated into…
