The following is a post from a community discussion on Amish books I found several years ago and took to heart when I write my Nurse Hal Amish series.
THIS is the kind of SIMPLE, AMISH reading that I'm talking about. I want to read about living, working, growing up, BEING --AMISH!!! Tell me (in detail) about collecting the eggs from the hen house and the…

CAN ANYONE WRITE A BOOK?
If you can write then yes you can write a book. Essentially, a book is just a bunch of words. A better question would be can anyone write a good book? And then the answer would be a categorical no. But don’t let me discourage you. Chances are if you have a passion for writing then there is a reason for it. And usually passion is enough to create success.
SO YOU ARE READY TO WRITE
Begin forming ideas and jot them down.…

To structure or not to structure, that is the question
The people I mix with have got somewhat bored with, and no longer wish to think about or discuss church structure. That’s rather a shame as I believe it’s important and perhaps seminal to the current time and the cultural collapse.
If pressed into a debate they say that it doesn’t matter what form of…

It is amazing how this novel, although fiction, follows the current events within the Vatican. It is almost as if the author was a mole within the walls of Vatican City. A must read!http://thevaticanconspiracies.com

O my Lord, help me with my request:
Set up Your permanent altar in my life.
Form the foundation of this altar,
with the unhewn rock of my stony heart,
since it represents the many hardships
of lack-luster, life experiences.
Organize these mundane rock fragments,
in a manner that is pleasing to You.
With this personal and secret platform,
I desire to commune with Thee frequently,
for it’s not for religious show or…

It’s a fresh morning of new mercies;
raise your hands in a moment of praise!
Do you recall that you’re in covenant
and covered with the blessings of today?
Spend some quiet and quality time with God;
speak genuinely and offer earnest prayers.
Lift up your concerns and needs of others;
demonstrate faith… by words you declare!
Celebrate the faithful witness of Christ;
open your spirit; pour out your soul to Him.
Find…

Recently, I started a discussion on Crimespace (a crime/thriller uber-fan sight I highly recommend for those obsessed with city lights, cigarettes, bad women and rye whiskey). I posed this question: Is there a place for humor in a hard-boiled thriller/noir? The answers I got were mixed, but there was a hesitancy that trended towards “No.” One Crimespacer quoted Otto Penzler – “Noir requires a sense of bleakness and despair, and characters so flawed, their failure is in their…

Back in February, we were supposed to let out a collective cheer when European governments said they had “frozen” the assets of Hosni Mubarak, the toppled dictator of Egypt. Switzerland, Britain and other European states said that they had heeded calls from Egypt’s new leadership to seize the wealth Mubarak had hidden in their cities, and to return this money to Egyptian taxpayers.
The British “discovered” assets worth £85 million that Mubarak…

The Nobel Laureate Konrad Lorenz in his 1973 book. Civilised Man’s Eight Deadly Sins alluded the paradoxical relationship between market economics and the threat of ecological catastrophe, when he addressed:
