The Path of the Phoenix - Rising From the Ashes of Teen Suicide

“In spite of everything I shall rise again; I will take up my pencil, which I have forsaken in my great discouragement, and I will go on with my drawing.” ~ Vincent Van Gogh

While I was catching up with e-mail last night, I overheard a story my husband was following on TV – a man served a long sentence for a crime he didn’t commit; when he was finally cleared of the charges, he could have chosen to be bitter toward the system that had forced him captive all those years, but he… Continue

Fifth Week of Writing "Jefferson’s Masterpiece"

In addition to providing historical information about what happened on the three days I wrote about last week, I also provided some insights into Thomas Jefferson and the peripheral events that were taking place in the Second Continental Congress. As you will see, Congress did not spend all of its time dealing with lofty questions of how to conduct a war with a ragtag army of farmers and tradesmen or how to achieve independence from Great Britain. The congressmen spent time…

READING BETWEEN THE LINES

I heard a quote the other day stating that fiction is more “real” than non-fiction because, in writing fiction, it's easier to tell the truth.

Think about it. If you're writing non-fiction, you have to stick to the facts. There's no way a writer can go inside the mind of the subject and detail how decisions are made. Only actions and consequences are recorded. One can surmise, conjecture, and deliberate, but will never really know the truth.

Fiction writers, like myself,… Continue

Choices

“In the long run, we shape our lives and we shape ourselves. The process never ends until we die. And the choices we make are ultimately our own responsibility.” ~ Eleanor Roosevelt

One of the most intriguing things about listening to people describe news events is their tendency to remember – and their preference to discuss – the most gruesome segments. I once heard someone say that the newscast he had just watched was not very interesting because nothing really… Continue

weak in have the greatest potential to destroy us. When your weakness is exploited in combat it

bounds you to its pain. Then you discover that your weakest areas can sometimes

have the greatest…

I've sharpened up my red pencil for another online critique. Today, my volunteer is pre-pubbed author Jane Lange. Please come over to add your thoughts about her WIP LOVE'S SOFT SURRENDER.
