Part strange

One of the strangest things about being a writer is people’s reaction when you tell them that you are. Most of the time there’s a slight admiration followed by the general expression that “yeah, everyone says they’re a writer”. But then when I tell them to Google my name and see what comes up, the admiration becomes real. Here’s what I’ve discovered about the nature of the arts and you can feel free to disagree with me, because like I say, these are only my biased opinions. Most people can…

Fact or Fiction?

It's no secret that I've written a novel entitled "The Long Road from Perdition".  When I asked writers to read the book and offer some constructive criticism, I was a little taken aback that they thought the book was factual. Some even believed that I was Nicholas and was narrating my life through his character.…

Later This Week: J.T. Lewis Prequel "Gabriel's Revenge"

Working at a dig in South America, Gabriel Celtic’s dreary existence is shattered by a one page telegram from back home, asking him for help on a murder… the murder of his friend!

Meeting a mysterious woman on the flight back, she seems to be trying unsuccessfully to drag him out of his dark mood. He is unnerved however, by the feeling that this “girl” seems…

Elements of Writing by John V. Amodeo, author of "The Captain's Coin"

“Give us the tools, we will finish the job.” These words, spoken by Winston Churchill to FDR at the beginning of the Blitz, say so much. Concise, to the point and without much-needed explanation, the message comes through loud and clear. Churchill needed the nuts-and-bolts of war materiel to fight the Nazis and secure victory. Simply put, FDR convinced…

DROP OUT

The room was sparse and dimly lit with flickering strawberry-scented candles. Power was out. It had been nearly a decade since Nathan had stood inside someone’s home; since that tragic day when he lost everything that ever mattered to him. Outside, a hurricane sounded like it was beating palm trees against the earth. Nathan didn’t know the woman who’d rescued him from the throes of the deadly storm, but he would soon enough. Her name is Miriam and she is about to drastically change…

Where Does John Reed & Jay Cody Begin & End?

John Reed’s book about growing up in Waltham in the late 1970s and early 1980s is under the category of fiction, but parts of it could very well be straight from a memoir.

The main character from the recently released book, “Another Lousy Day in Paradise,” is Jay Cody, and it’s hard to decipher exactly where Reed ends and Cody…

The Green Veil - a review

This book had me pondering and thinking about it long after I read the last page and put it down. It’s the kind of book that makes you want to go back and reread parts. Now that is a great book in my estimation, and The Green Veil by Naomi Musch, is just that. It is the first in a series of historical romances set in mid-nineteenth century Wisconsin. I don’t claim to be a history buff, but I am definitely going to seek out the other two books in the ‘Empire in…

A Tumbled Stone review

A Tumbled Stone by Marcia Laycock is the sequel to her first novel One Smooth Stone. I loved the first book and was anxious to read the second installment. I wasn’t disappointed. A Tumbled Stone introduces Andrea, a fostered teenager who has struggled all her life to fit in while living on a farm in rural Saskatchewan. When she finds that she is pregnant, she decides to run away to the city. The book also follows the life of Alex Perrin (Donnelly), whose adventures and oftentimes traumatic…

Lightningsource

Phew !  What a nightmare !   In their defence I will say that they specify perfectly clearly right at the start that their system is for publishers, professionals and experts on the internet - not for the likes of me.  I have managed to wade through it successfully, but it has taken weeks of hard work and the worse part of it all is the lack of cooperation from my so-called "Publishing consultant".  Be warned - this is not a publishing consultant, just an office girl, and if you are not…
