The article about Jewish military personnel in Iraq training as lay leaders caught my eye on
www.jewsingreen.com – an online resource for Jews in the U.S. military.
I clicked on the link to the July 10th article in the Jewish Daily Forward by Richard Tenorio titled “American Soldiers in Iraq Enlist in a Different Kind of Service.”
Here’s the beginning of the article:

As you may know, I rarely read my poetry. It's certainly not from lack of love of the genre. But two very special poets have asked me to read at an exceptionally supportive bookstore in Pacific Palisades in a couple of weeks (info below). I hope you'll join us and support our efforts. I'll read a couple of poems from Tracings, a couple from my coming chapbook She Wore Emerald Then co-authored with Magdalena Ball. Maybe a couple brand new ones, too. Please mark your calendars.
Carolyn…

For God hath not given us a spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.
2 Timothy 1:7 (KJV)
As I mentioned the other day, the boys and I are in Orlando. As my friend, Cindy, said, "A kid's dream vacation." And she's right. I really didn't plan it that way, but when you have two little boys, well, you do things that they like. And that's okay. I enjoy seeing them happy. I didn't want to spend the whole week at the theme parks, so I told…

Learning to Shoot a Gun
I was shocked when a sweet friend shared that she had at one time been a guard at a women’s prison. The job was rough, the demands stringent, and the circumstances often mirrored a nightmare. But armed with her gun, a sense of security must have eased her tension.
Her instructions were to shoot, no reservations, no hesitation…just fire should she see any inmate display even a slight attempt to escape.
She learned how, she was trained, she…

There's always so much to do, and I've neglected BMN. I would invite all of you to look over and join twitter.com. Comments are limited to a total of 140 characters and spaces. The restriction of format necessitates precise and disciplined thinking. It also makes comments easy to read. It's like eating pistachios: you can't eat or read just one, but have to keep going. On twitter my user name is: Tedsays. Thanks and see you there, and here, too. Ted

Are You Happy?
July 22nd, 2008
Did you say yes or no? Your answer will tell you what you need to do next!
I have learned a few things about happiness. It really has very little to do with the things we have, or what we are doing. It really is not based on anything outside of ourselves. It is an internal state. No one can make you happy, and no one can take away your happiness. Oh, they might sway things one way or another for a time, but the real, deep down joy can not be…

Life can only be described as having gone from hectic to frantic. The big news is that my debut novel, SILENCED CRY, received honorable mention at the 2008 New York Book Fair. I heard about the contest late last year and although I was excited about submitting my novel, as the deadline drew near, I began to hesitate. After all, what were the odds of getting noticed among ... how many other excellent entries, right? I’m thrilled to receive the mention. You’ll find the complete list of winners…

Your love, O Lord, reaches to the heavens, your faithfulness to the skies.
Psalm 36:5
The boys and I are in Orlando this week, taking a bit of a vacation. Bobby couldn't get the week off, with his new job, but since we had already booked our week, I decided I would bring the boys myself, which is a major accomplishment in itself. Just a few years ago, I would never take off somewhere with the boys for a week, by myself, but that might be another story for…

I had the opportunity to interview Jill Lubin and here is a little about her latest book:
In an easy-to-read format, GET NOTICED…GET REFERRALS shows consumers how to carefully cultivate and develop relationships by using the same principles publicists and brand managers use to obtain more attention to their products. The book explains how to create an effective sound bite and memorable introductory. It then coaches readers on how to convey a consistent "brag message" that can be used…

Episode 7 of the television series ARMY WIVES had nothing outstanding about the episode. Yet it again reminded me of what I perceive as the strengths and weaknesses of the show:
As always, for me, the parts about the men ring true – Pamela’s husband Chase worried that in combat a team member won’t have his back, Roxy’s husband Trevor insisting it is his duty to return to his unit in Iraq.
And it’s always the parts about the women that don’t ring true for me. I continue to…

Soldiers’ Angels is an organization benefiting U.S. troops that I have previously blogged about. And on my book’s website at

I am in the business of helping people find joy in their lives. One thing I see a lot, is people who know they are on the wrong road, but they refuse to take an exit ramp. They just travel on and on, getting more and more lost, or they back-up and go up and down the same road over and over. You can not get to a new place traveling on the same road.
If you are on the road to nowhere, get off! Take an exit and get on a new road. The fact you are traveling down a…

Did you know there are books written to provide such information? I can see the need, the hunger to know the secrets, and the tips for a better experience coveted by visitors who yearn to get a close-up glance at Mickey Mouse.
This thought is fresh in my mind as two friends and I visited EPCOT this past week. Goodness those lines! When I learned a 70-minute wait was on the horizon, thoughts immediately raced through my head—the myriad of tasks I could accomplish during those same…
