I’m sitting on the dock this morning, my fishing rod baited
with a shrimp and hoping to catch some lunch when a strange thought occurred to
me. Fishing and becoming a successful author are similar activities. Except
when you’re fishing, you use bait to catch stuff and when you’re a writer you
use your books to try and catch something, that something being an agent,
publisher, or audience. The analogy expounds even further. With fishing, the
quality of bait is…

This morning, I set the controls in my transporter for Portland to visit this week's featured author. Now, I have an interesting situation because he really wanted to have the interview about half an hour before the beginning of the Daytona 500. He wanted to be sipping $8.00 beers and eating cheese-steak sandwiches in an air-conditioned box with an expansive view of…

Fruit right from the vine, I love this kind of stuff. Michael Tabman lived through all this; it was his job for 25 years. No research had to be done for the project; we are getting first-hand knowledge and experience with this series. Each installment for this new digital short story series is sent to the FBI for a once over so no sensitive information is released that may jeopardize any current investigations or to make tactics known that should not be.
Basically, as the reader, once…

Here’s a question you may be asking yourself: Do I (Giovanni) really groove on this stuff? The answer is simply I enjoy good writing, plain and simple. And if that means that I follow that credo to read a work about the “Plain People”, my friends the Amish, then that is where I will go. I also knew going into this it didn’t include anything on Big Daddy Abel, EZ, Hez, Jake “The Plummer”, or any of the other “Amish Outlaws”. Be forewarned. But I digress yet again, sorry.
Melding two…

As readers of my blog know, I am currently on vacation in the Florida Keys while my step-kids are at our house up north. The Keys is and was home to many famous artists and writers including its most notable resident, Earnest Hemmingway. Hemmingway lived and fished here, and wrote some of his most memorable novels in this tropical paradise. So, how has my own writing been going? I must admit the scenery is breathtaking and watching the sunsets really does get the creative juices flowing. But…

The covers of these stories are cute but the story inside is one that is filled with anger, heartache, revenge, and humor. Cody Toye is a multi-genre author that has touched on a very serious subject with “Dribbles”. Job loss, dealing with it, some call it “being separated” from one’s job or vocation. Let’s call it what it is, job loss and anger. Toye allows his characters to feel real emotion, act out, vent it, seek revenge and get back at those that have done wrong. Dribbles the Squirrel…

Are there any absolutes right now in this wide open frontier known as digital publishing? I think not. What I do know is that there is plenty of what I do not know, and that is: what is the best price point for a piece of work? How much should it be sold for? Why do readers buy one story but not another?
When I have totally understood that and write the book on it, I will tell you. As it stands now we at Trestle Press put our stories up with very easy to understand price tags: $.99…

As I write this I am on vacation. Yes, vacation. That
magical two weeks a year when you leave your cares behind and head off into the
sunset. In my case, this is Key West Florida. It’s beautiful! Right now it’s 82
degrees and sunny with low humidity. I watched the recent snowstorm in the
northeast on television and thanked my lucky stars that I left Pennsylvania two
days before it hit. I do write on vacation, usually in the morning before the
high heat of the day sets…

I’ve been writing since I was 13. I’d recite tales of Conan the Stamp Collector in the schoolyard and have my friends in stitches. I saw my first story published in a newsletter back in 1992 for the Creative Writers’ Sig. They weren’t very good, but I certainly had a passion for it. My time in the Army has been rich with characters and events from various dangerous parts of the world. I began to think seriously about publishing short stories a few years ago after I completed a tour of…
