For book/ebook authors, publishers, & self-publishers
My artist wife wrote a book for artists - Passion and Paint in Creating "Great Art". We did our own layout work using Microsoft Office Publisher, and a computer we had built especially for graphics work. I am printing the books on a Xerox laser printer and binding them with equipment from the Maping Co. in Finland. This has been an enjoyable process, and the finished product is quite satisfying. Marketing, to date, is neither enjoyable nor satisfying.
We "put together" a…Continue

I am looking for a distributor. I do have the names of several, but it seems that most of the authors I speak to are not happy with the distributor they have. I have heard stories of books being sent back at the author's expense and not much of a profit being made.
Right now my book is only at amazon.com and on my website, but I have had people email me telling me that they looked for it in Barnes and Noble and couldn't find it, so I guess now would be a good…Continue
Author, Rita Gray, has “been there and felt that” as the mother of a seriously ill child. The terms “seriously ill child” and “emotional roller coaster” are synonymous. On September 25, 1996, she buckled her emotional roller coaster seat belt. “At times," she says, "the unforeseeable twists and turns of childhood cancer seemed to catapult me out of my seat. Eight words accurately describe this…Continue

It is interesting to see the public reaction in Russia to the death of Boris Yelsun. If memory serves me correctly it was not long ago when the citizens of Russia did not have the privilege to many of the rights that they have access to today.…Continue

Just when I thought that I could relax the muscles in my face that held my eyebrows in a permanent raised position do to the torrid details of the sexual abuse and sex scandals that has plagued the church especially the Catholic Church here in the our country over the past few years. I see that the morally upstanding good old boys of our religious institutions are in the news again. Over…Continue

Now I am sure all of you are like me and have an opinion one way or the other about the fall out of the whole MSNBC and the firing of you know who for his comments “Nappy headed Hoes”. I just think that we all need to stay focus on the fundamental issue here. Individuals that are on the airways that are on public airways that are funded by the public can not say what they want. There is a…Continue

I subscribed to Amazon Advantage a month or two after my book came out and I have found it to be the best way to get readers to purchase copies. Buyers are able to find my book using the tools that Amazon provides. I know that folks are buying my book who did not hear about it from me.
Checking sales with http://charteo.us/ is a good tool as well as I am able to see where my ranking is without having to go to my Amazon page. Looking at the page is…Continue

I just became a co-agent on a project. I don’t know if agents often invite clients to share in commissions when they bring good stuff to them, but mine did. I didn’t refuse the offer. The whole story of how I became a co-agent is worth reading on www.publishersmarketplace.com/members/billstephens…Continue

The term author platform is popping up all over the place, but what exactly is an author platform? Essentially, your platform is based on your expertise--a specific nonfiction topic about which you write or your genre and unique voice/style as a fiction author. Having a strong author platform is becoming increasing important in marketing your books or even landing a deal with a major publisher.
Here are my 15 favorite ways to develop your author platform:
Sorry I haven't been more active on my blog. I just got out of the hospital (mental) after being struck by a 2X4 board (figuratively) in the middle of the forehead. You see, for years I have been marketing my books (on gymnastics and cheerleading) primarily to club owners and coaches.
Recently, the imaginary 2X4 described above, whacked me in the head and the realization struck me that my real market was the Mom's. What mother wouldn't pay $19.95 for a book that…Continue

The Internet can be one of the most effective ways to market a book (if you know what you are doing). Unfortunately, many authors don't know how to use the Internet to their advantage. I have been marketing on the Net for many years and make my living from doing so. I have written and developed a great resource that addresses a lot of the areas you need to know about to gain visibility, credibility and revenues from your Internet presence. To access go to…Continue
Four days after the launch of my controversial assisted suicide novel Whale Song, it made Amazon'ca's bestseller list. What a thrill! And I have been told that the first print run has nearly sold out. Then to top it all off, some major Hollywood film producers requested to see Whale Song and a package was sent out 2 weeks ago. I think that makes about half a dozen Hollywood film companies interested.
I am in 'mega marketing mode'…Continue
Yesterday, Friday 20th, I visited the Globeforum in Stockholm. On a round table meeting "female entrepreneurs as role models" I was introduced as a role model!
I felt of course honoured but I wanted to tell the audience that I am not a good role model for anybody. I am always striving for something new, always trying to learn something, always having big goals and I sincerely believe I can make a difference in making this world a better place to live and to contribute to world…Continue
