Question from Member: How does a fledgling author set up a book signing? I have heard that some new authors bring their own books to Barnes & Noble on a consignment basis.
John's Answer: To set up a book signing, just call the event coordinator at the bookstore. That's the person to ask for. Tell her how many people you can bring into the store for the event. Tell her what you will do with publicity to help get people into their…

While in Alaska for the Alaska Writers Group Conference, I discovered that there were over 100,000 glaciers in Alaska but only 700 of them had names. I asked the ranger on the boat if the one I'm pointing to below was named. He said that he didn't think so. So I named it. The Kremer Glacier.
After naming it, I asked him to let everyone on the boat know. He did. So now it is officially the Kremer Glacier. If you'd like a glacier named after you, let me know. I'm thinking of setting up…

I formed a friendship with the editor of my publisher and one day asked her what she looked for in manuscripts. Her answer..."A different take on the same old story." Makes sense doesn't it?
She confided in me that they received a lot of manuscripts on domestic violence but most of them were about being abused and still being alive, so there! No directions on how to get out of the relationship safely, no guidance, no helpful advice. It was almost like they needed to just get it out of…

Question from Poet: I'm 15 years
old and love writing. It's my true passion. I write free verses, modern
poetry. I was just looking for a good publisher. Could you please
assist me through this? I really want to bring out new poetry to the
audience, because people seem to have forgotten poetry and go for Harry
Potter or other fiction genres. I really know I can do this, and will
try my best. I'm still writing and have around 20… Continue

Seth Godin always has interesting points to make. In his post today at
his blog, he made the following point, one that I've been trying to get through to people for a very long time:
"The art of marketing is not finding more money to do more marketing. It's figuring out how to tell a story that spreads with the resources you've got."
So many self-publishers and new authors want to throw money at…

The following post is excerpted from Fred Gleeck's ezine, Fred Gleeck Insights. Fred is a great marketer. He tells a great story here:
I
love New York! One of the days when I was running around like a chicken
with it's head cut off on the subway I saw this guy hawking something
further down the subway car. In my typical NYer style I averted my
gaze, hoping not be accosted to give him money.
Lucky I couldn't
do it. I squinted… Continue

I just discovered an interesting website with lots of activity. It's called Twitter.com, and it is designed to keep friends and other interested parties informed about what you are doing -- especially via cell phone text messages (which you can access either via the website, IM, or your cell phone.
I'm going to use it to let people who become my followers or friends (two categories in Twitter) -- to let them know whenever I update a page on my website. As I Twitter, the… Continue
