An introduction to the Indigo Girls

Just listened to the Indigo Girls' new CD "Happy Holly Days" and I have to say it was pretty good. This is coming from someone of course who isn't a big fan of Christmas music. If the Indigo Girls put out a CD there is no way that I can pass it up. The girls have been a huge inspiration ever since I first heard them in Peni Lotoza's car after we got out of work at Terror on Church Street back in '93. 'Blood and Fire' was the first song I had ever heard and though many had…

The Value of Children's books in Rhyme (by children's author Carol Zelaya)

Which books are the ones we remember from our childhood, pages we really remember word for word as young children? I would bet that they were the nursery rhymes that we can still recite as parents and grandparents even today. What made them so memorable was the simple fact that they were written in rhyme. Isn't that why our children can rattle off so many verses from the Dr. Seus books today? When I wrote my three children's books about Emily the Chickadee, they were written in rhyme as a… Continue

If Emily Stone Had a TV Show, This Would Be the Title

Every so often, I will flip by the program “To Catch a Predator” when it is being re-aired as part of the late-night programming on MSNBC. I am sure that many of you are familiar with the show. Host Chris Hansen surprises men who have arrived at a home with the intention of having sex with an… Continue

Emily’s Crime Watch – Tip #9

Many of us take advantage of enjoying our local parks and beaches, especially this time of year when the weather is still nice and warm. It’s a great place to just relax or enjoy regular exercise, such as walking and jogging.

Living in California, I love to take advantage of all the wonderful parks and beaches whenever I can. It’s a great place for me to… Continue

Emily’s Crime Watch – Tip #2

Profiles are Helpful, but Should Never Limit the Search

George Metesky, “The Mad Bomber”
I have always been amazed at the ability of FBI profilers to piece together seemingly trivial shreds of information to develop a thorough character sketch of a wanted criminal. My respect for this process only heightened after engaging in my own… Continue

Fourth Amendment vs. Emily Stone

In my new book Compulsion, protagonist Emily Stone takes extensive measures to gather surveillance evidence against some of the worst criminals on our streets. She hides in her truck, the woods, or any other available cover to record the photographs and videos that will bring yet another pedophile,… Continue

The True Meaning of "Compulsion"

Have you ever had a craving for a certain type of food? Perhaps an overwhelming urge to bungee jump? What causes us to feel these overwhelming feelings? You may feel that these are trivial examples of “testing fate,” but think about it. You’re probably rationalizing that while people get cravings or urges, they can control them.

Some can control it, others…

Bringing Minds Together to Tackle Unsolved Mysteries

In my thriller novel Compulsion, I introduce my readers to Emily Stone. She works alone to track down and record some of the most despicable predators in our communities. Without an official police badge or the equipment offered by law enforcement, Emily uses her own sharp intuition and tools of technology to… Continue

There May Be More Victims of Serial Killers Than We Realize

In addition to keeping busy with my ongoing writing projects, I also think it is important to devote some time regularly to staying current on the latest research and news concerning criminology and forensics. In addition to maintaining my long-standing interest in these fields of study, I believe that keeping up-to-date with the latest news helps to add accuracy… Continue

Justice Delayed, but Justice Served

I was watching one of those “Cold Cases” programs on cable television over the weekend. I guess I could consider it research for further writing projects. The documentary focused on the shooting of two police officers in a small… Continue

Galley Time

The lifecycle of a novel is a long one. First I submit a proposal to my editor. This usually consists of three chapters and a synopsis. If she likes what she sees, she makes my agent an offer. They haggle a bit and finally everything is agreed upon. And we're off to the races.

I may or may not adhere to my original synopsis and in the case of VEXING THE VISCOUNT, this story didn't even have a title. It was the option book in a 2 book… Continue

Dog Torture

Ok. I confess. That was a mean tease. I'd never torture dogs.

Unless you count making them look ridiculous.

If you could use a laugh (and anyone with a 401K these days definitely can!) pop over to my MySpace and enjoy a slideshow of my beloved dogs in pirate costumes. If you have some funny pet costumes to share, please send them to me and I'll add them to the… Continue

Computer Scare

I am the anti-techno queen. Perhaps that's why I love to lose myself in historical romance. No need for hard drives or google when you're dallying with a swashbuckling hero like my Gabriel Drake from PLEASURING THE PIRATE.

However, I live in a world and work in an industry that requires me to be computer proficient. Fortunately, I'm married to a modern-day hero, a computer guru. His expertise is in larger systems, but still, it's nice to have someone around who speaks fluent… Continue
