“Bull Cyclone” Sullivan (The Toughest Coach ON OFFICIALS There Ever Was)

There is a magnificent seventeen page story written in Sports Illustrated  in 1982 by Frank DE Ford  about a  Mississippi Junior College coach was not only the toughest  coach that ever lived but was also the toughest on football officials as well. This story is the longest sports story  ever written in Sports Illustrated’s history , and in my humble opinion was way too short. The gentleman that the story was written about was named Robert Victor Sullivan but was so tough he had two nick…

Another independent, local bookstore has the book!

I managed to cross state lines and get another book into an indie bookstore! If you're in Mississippi go and check out Bay Books on Main street. The owner is very accomodating and she has two very cool cats that take up residence inside. Most importantly, you can get a copy of I Wandered from New Orleans right off the shelf! In real live bookstores in New Orleans, Mississippi and Atlanta! It's too bad that poetry is mostly disregarded by people as being too complicated and vague.…

Visible Links -- looks like a cool way to advertise your book

I've been playing around with http://visibletweets.com today. You can link it up to your tweets and make a nice display for a bookstore or somewhere. Would love to hear from anyone who has used this effectively.

Anyway, go to www.visibletweets.com and type in #sklopfer/civil-rights and I made a display about my book, Who Killed Emmett Till? Not completely sure I've done this right, but it worked.… Continue

Just got some great publicity; feature posted to Google News & AP

Just got some great publicity on my civil rights books. Feature story on my work has been posted to Google News and AP.

Susan Klopfer believes the long, sad chapter of American history surrounding the civil rights struggles of African Americans should never be forgotten. Using her journalistic talents, she’s authored two books focused on unsolved atrocities in the Mississippi Delta region that have brought new light to several… Continue

Found a social justice group working in the same direction I'm moving!

(Photo: Legendary Organizer Fannie Lou Hamer by Charmain Reading)

Fannie Lou Hamer, a Mississippi Delta civil rights leader, was frequently the target of social injustice. The town where she was once beaten, Winona, is currently the target of a murder investigation by the Friends of Justice.

Friends of Justice, an advocacy organization, launches narrative-based campaigns around unfolding cases where due process has broken… Continue

Just finished the last post of my blog book, Who Killed Emmett Till?; ready to morph it into an e-book

Site where a service station was stood in Glendora, Mississippi. Clinton Melton, a black service station attendant and family man who was not part of the civil rights movement, was killed while working there, a month after the Milam/Bryant trial in nearby Sumner. Melton was shot to death by a friend of Milam's who was drunk and angry at the time. Melton's wife, Beulah, died when she reportedly drove her car off the road into a bayou. She had been… Continue

Blogging works! Just interviewed by the Christian Science Monitor

Just had a lengthy interview with SCM and article should come out Wednesday. Because I've been blogging my book, Who Killed Emmett Till, the reporter called on a story she's writing about civil rights education in Mississippi. The interview lasted about an hour and I was able to give her lots of history and background. Fingers are crossed!

Meanwhile, post 16 is up.

Post 15 is Up: Who Killed Emmett Till?, FREE Blog Book

A small lake outside of Greenville, Mississippi. Photo by Susan Klopfer.

THROUGHOUT HER LIFE, Emmett Till’s mother, carried a frightening story close to her heart – a story she often replayed in her mind. She didn’t have to own the story, since her family had left Mississippi and its inherent meanness when she was just a baby – like many black Mississippians, they moved to Argo, on the outskirts of Chicago, to escape the misery of… Continue

Just added 14th post to Who Killed Emmett Till? free blog book

Land of King Cotton ...

Late August in the Mississippi Delta is cruel. I know this is true because I lived there two summers — on the grounds of Parchman Penitentiary, just a few short miles from the site when Emmett Till was murdered.

Mid-nineties is common and typically it is so hot and humid that if you’ve been sitting a while and stand up, your backside sticks to your clothes, even if they're made of cotton.…

'There's Going To Be Hell to Pay in Mississippi.' Dr. T.R.M. Howard, black leader from Mound Bayou

Mississippi Delta Blues musicians mural painted on the outside of a Clarksdale, Tahoma County building.

It was Wednesday, August 31, 1955 and Dr. T.R.M. Howard, a wealthy black leader in Mississippi – a man of great influence – was leaving Chicago where he had been doing organizing work for the Regional Council of Negro Leadership, a society he founded to promote a program of civil rights, self-help, and business… Continue

Post 11; didn't meet my deadline, but I'm still having a wonderful time researching and learning

11th Post, Blog Book, Who Killed Emmett Till. Focuses on Mississippi Mau Mau, return of black WWII soldiers who become civil rights movement leaders -- Medgar Evers, Aaron Henry and Amzie Moore. Plus info on Nazi ties to Mississippi (Draper Fund). The source? A Rutgers University scholar, Dr. William Tucker, was unearthing sources of funding for academic research when he ran into a story about Mississippi that gave him a jolt.

Plus .. If pundit Pat Buchanan believes that black… Continue

Who Killed Emmett Till? BlogBook continues ...

Now working on a blogbook chapter of Who Killed Emmett Till? -- about Dr. T.R.M. Howard, the Rev. George Lee, Regional Council of Negro Leadership (RCNL) and White Citizens' Council -- next post.

I've got to work hard and fast because the anniversary of Emmett Till's death is tomorrow. At approximately 2 a.m. on the morning of August 28, 1955, this young Chicago school boy was kidnapped, tortured and killed in the Mississippi Delta.

He "didn't know the rules," a woman from… Continue

Eery Photo of Tallahatchie County Courthouse in Sumner, Mississippi

Was going through my photos and found this shot of the Tallahatchie County Courthouse. Actually, the county has two courthouses, one in Sumner and the other in Charleston. This is the courthouse where the trial of Milam and Bryant took place, the two men accused of murdering young Emmett Till. They were found innocent but later admitted to a Look Magazine reporter and gave their account of what took place.

Here's an interesting… Continue
