Give thanks in all things? No way!

In the past I’ve gone through tough tests, painful trials and agonizing tragedy. And you’d think I’d be a pro at facing them, enduring them and move forward unscathed.

Nope. I still battle with subtle attacks. Recently we had an issue with one of my sons. The results and consequences could have been tragic and…

So I do a little dance...

When a package comes in the mail, I wiggle in a happy dance and giggle like I did in high school. This isn't just a package nor the contents common, ordinary items. But they're carriers of love, kindness and thoughtfulness.…

What fell on September 11...

After weeks of arduous work, I looked forward to our mini get-a-away. Hubby, some friends and I decided to stay a weekend at Disney’s Boardwalk hotel. Our dinner reservations were made, massages booked, suntan lotion packed and lots of laughter planned.…

Ugh...Learning English is no picnic!

Did you know English is the most difficult language to learn? Trust me, it is. At twelve years and just entering the U.S., the language was nothing but incomprehensible noise to me.

Tons of words sound the same, but have different meanings. How about the word "wear" or…

Grrr...those pesky typos!

As is my routine, I was creating an entry to my journal. And in my hurry I typed Sept. 3, 2097. When my voice synthesizer read what I wrote, I chuckled. Then I wondered what if that were the real date of my journal entry? No doubt, by then I’d be in the arms of the Lord.

But that notion prompted me to evaluate the legacy I’d leave. Along with my physical genes, I hope my descendants also inherit my longing to receive God’s grace.

And because of His grace, each page of my…

Does God say no?

He did to me…many times! Twenty-three years ago, I begged and pleaded to have my sight back. God said no.…

The first thing I do in the morning...

Is eat, that’s right…I admit it with not a trace of shame. But I wake up hungry. I have friends who wouldn’t even think of putting anything in their mouth until that caffeine begins to percolate in their veins.…

No, not the one overseas; but the one closer to home.

While He Knits Together...

The other day I wrinkled my nose at the advances in technology. But I have to admit, with tears dribbling down, my heart stirred in amazement at all it can bring to light.

Since my oldest son and his wife will make us grandparents for the first time, I decided to pen the joy that bursts in my heart by creating a diary. In it I relate the events that dot our…

Whoe! That's a Big One!

I think technology has gone beyond its limits. In fact, I think it’s gotten down right scary. I hope you don’t mind me being a bit bold, blunt and maybe big mouthed about it. Technology advances are for the most part wonderful enhancements for us all. Except when they invade our privacy.

Here’s my story: Yesterday, Tuesday I went like an innocent lamb to the eye clinic to have the pesky cataracts removed. No big deal.…

Sink into the Overstuffed Pillow of His Comfort

I just received a wrenching note in which these questions echoed between the lines:

What is the purpose, what is the path of my life?

Trudging through pain,…

Rats! Got to Lose Those Cataracts

My ophthalmologist drew close as he examined my eyes. "Hmm. they’re pretty thick." He pulled back. "When we removed the cataracts, maybe some sight will be restored, especially on the left eye." He patted my hand. "But I don’t want you to get your hopes up high, or disappointed or discouraged if it doesn’t happen."…

A New Twist to Scrapbooking

I predict that hundreds of years from now, when they dig up ruins of our time, they’ll find scrap books everywhere. They’ll reveal signs of our culture and our values.

Has Scrap-booking become a fever? A craze? A fad? Or a meaningful and creative way to immortalize our cherished memories?

I’d like to introduce a not-so-new way to use this unique way to arrange memorable events.…

Fighting the Traffic Jams of Life

Back in my hometown of La Paz, Bolivia, traffic can roil anyone’s nerves. Red lights are commonly ignored. Stop signs do not exist. But the horn does, one loud beep alerts those on the crossing street you’re coming through.

Amazingly, serious accidents are not common. Fender benders, yes. A cab ride through those crowded streets promises an adventure with unexpected episodes worth writing…

Thanks! Divided or United? (July 4)

While colorful fireworks burst through the dark skies, and red, white and blue flags flap in the wind, a sense of pride swells up in me. Not an arrogant pride, but one of gratitude and appreciation. Let me tell you why.

As I sit at my computer tapping on my keyboard, comfortable in my home’s air-conditioning and other luxuries, my mind goes back to my native country of Bolivia. I go back to my birthplace, where daily protests block streets and put an abrupt halt to business. Homes…
