Sometimes upgrading to a newer version of a computer program can be a good thing. Other times, your computer may not be compatible with the new version, the new version is bloated, or all the options you liked are no longer available. OldVersion.com has been supplying the online community with old versions of various programs since…

One of the primary issues about which my clients complain is that they never stop running their businesses. They say their day is an endless cycle of completing tasks for clients, having conversations with prospective clients, and networking to find clients. They know that they need to find some time to plan what they're doing and where they're going in their businesses, and the only time they manage to carve out for themselves to do…

While I hate the time change that occurs every fall (causing darkness to fall around 5 PM -- yuck!), I look forward to November and December because that's when I take 2 weeks of vacation time each year. Traditionally, I take off the week of the U.S. Thanksgiving holiday and take off the week between Christmas and New Year's Day.…

This area of Texas seems to be inundated by various phone directories. At last count, I think we had 3 directories in addition to the one published by our local phone provider. I decided that I was tired of them taking up valuable shelf space, so I threw out all but one. Why? Because when I need a local product or service, I'm more inclined to find the local business online rather than referring to the local telephone…

Believe it or not, selling door-to-door is still alive and well in 2007. This past weekend, our doorbell rang and at the door was a young man from the Houston area who was in town offering his services as a curbside house number painter. For $25 he offered to paint our house number on our curb so that we can easily be found by emergency vehicles, delivery services, and the local pizza…

You may have heard the saying that "the gold is in your list" for your online business. I've found that to be the case, despite any number of social marketing techniques like blogging, MySpace, etc. It's always extremely helpful to have a list of people to whom you can market.
How do you develop that list and keep adding people to it? You create a client-capturing device. A client-capturing device is a free giveaway that is of value to your target…

Fall has finally arrived here in SE Texas (days are in the mid-70s with low humidity and nights are in the 60s ). For some of you, that may still feel like summer weather, but it's a great relief to our dog days of August and September, when the heat and the humidity (and the mosquitoes) are brutal!
Eric and I took advantage of this…

I was working on a PowerPoint presentation and needed a pie chart graph to represent the results of a survey I wanted to discuss. I used to know how to create such a graph from Excel, but haven't done that in a long time and didn't have the patience to figure out how to do that again.…

After many months of procrastination, I finally got around to adding a hover ad to my website. A hover ad is a type of pop-up ad that appears in your browser window from the side or top of the screen, or may just slowly float in front of the page you're viewing, or may suddenly pop in and bounce up and down for a bit. What differentiates a hover ad from traditional pop-up ads is that it's not blockable by pop-up blockers built into web browsers.
The…

This week Eric and I became the proud parents of a....gong. Yes, you read it correctly. Eric has wanted a gong for a long time, and over the weekend he decided now was the time to stop thinking about making this purchase and actually do it. We searched a couple of sites (including Amazon.com, where Eric does ALL of his shopping). However, he didn't see anything appealing. I had gone gong shopping a few years ago with a…

One of the biggest mistakes that I see service business owners make is taking on as a client anyone who has a 98.6 degree temperature who can pay them money. This is especially prevalent with new service business owners, as they are willing to do almost anything in order to land that first couple of clients.
Invariably, what they quickly discover is that their practice is full of a bunch of clients with whom they hate working. Does this sound like…
