That’s what characterizes our dishes from Bolivia. But one trait that I shake my head about is the way it’s served.

Contrary to American style, each person is served a full plate. The Hostess scoop a portion of each item on a plate and carries it to the table, placing it before each guest.

This past Friday, my Dad’s brothers arrived from Bolivia for a short visit. And as part of the cultural tradition, my mom insists in serving everyone Bolivian style.

“Let them all get what they want,” I suggested.

With spoon in hand, my Mom does her thing. “No, no. If I do it that way, I know they won’t help themselves as they should. They’re too shy and will only take a little bit.” She follows her routine of scooping mounds of vegetables, potatoes and slices of meat, arranging all items on each plate.

Hmm…so she knows what they’ll like, how much and from which items on the menu? If you asked her if that’s so, she’d give a resounding ‘yes.’

But what also characterizes our meals is the items placed at the center of the table-- the basket of bread and the hot sauce. Its potency equals that of the deliciously hot Asian Wasabi. Eaten by itself, it can clear sinuses for a couple of years. But when blended with other foods, the flavor makes our taste buds do the Cha Cha Cha.

Mom knows what our guests prefer...and the Lord knows what we need. While she dishes out the indicated portion, the Lord is also spooning out exactly what our soul craves for the day; He’s placed the amount of strength, of endurance and of peace to fill the craving that can churn inside us.

And at the center of the table of life, we find a small dish of challenges, disappointments, or difficulties. Often they burn and leave a stinging sensation in our heart.

But when blended with the faithfulness and power of His Word, they enhance our life and bring a new flavor to our day, strength for our moments and hope for things to come.

If your soul is craving for a dish of peace flavored with security, the divine table of His love is set. He spooned the exact portion to meet all your needs. He’s the perfect chef, divine and able to give second and third servings of hope…"The Lord is my portion," says my soul, "Therefore I hope in Him!" (Lam 3:24-25).
