I should say stupid things "I" do. “Can’t find my cell phone,” hubby murmured as he paced from room to room.

“Where did you use it last?” I asked, as I picked up the home phone to dial his cell—a tried and true way to find lost cell phones these days. But no luck.

We did a mental trace of the places it could be. The next morning, still discussing the possible spots where he might have left it, we hopped in the car and headed to church. We looked under the seats, in the console, around the console. No phone.

I grabbed my cell and began calling the places we’d gone the night before—the theatre, the restaurant, our friend’s car who drove us. No one had seen it. I dialed his cell one more time just in case. Nothing.

Hubby’s impending business trip to the West coast added a bit of urgency to locate it since it contained important phone numbers.

Sigh. A bit frustrated, I closed the flap of my cell. We pulled in the parking lot at church, I slipped out of my seat, and before Hubby closed the passenger door, he gave a light chuckle, “Here it is.”

What? Sure enough, he found it on my seat. I’d been sitting on it the whole time.

Blushing, I have to admit that lately I’ve been also looking for something that is necessary and often lost—confidence. I’d had a misunderstanding with a friend and in order to resolve it I had to gather confidence to have the right words—honest yet firm, diplomatic yet direct, tactful yet clear.

So I looked and looked in me and scrambled for the dose of confidence needed to accomplish such a task. And I became flustered when looking for it in my limited abilities and somewhat resourceful self. Realizing it wasn’t enough, tension built.

From now on, when facing the war of stress, anxiety, tension, and fear, I go to the source of all confidence and echo David’s words: “The Lord is my light and my salvation, whom should I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life. Of whom should I be afraid? If an army raise up against me, my heart will not fear. Though war break out against me, even then will I be confident” (Psalm 27:1).

“This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us. And if we know that he hears us—whatever we ask—we know that we have what we asked of him” (1 John 5:14-15).

Confidence is in the asking, reassurance is in the believing, and the results are in His promising that He will deliver. So if you misplaced that important confidence…no need to fret, it’s closer than you think.
