Long ago, when I had to interpret those words, a myriad of feelings slid through my head. What could possibly drive someone to utter that gloomy phrase? Are there events that pile up in such a way that you reach the end and all that’s left is hate?

I’ve had days where bad news stomped in like muddy shoes on a clean floor. We don’t expect it, and aren’t ever prepared. You probably have been there. The routine, the details of daily life follow through uneventfully. Until a phone call, a diagnosis from a doctor, the negative response from the finance institution, the teenager who’s still deaf to reason, and a spouse who is blind to your ways—they all place a black mark of murk on the sunshine of our days.

From annoying to downright disturbing—that’s the range of ugliness that can waltz into our life.
But do you think God didn’t know this about us? About our situation? About our crazy life and the insane demands we place on ourselves?

Sure, He knew. He knew we’d be taxed and bent, but He didn’t leave us with our feelings ricocheting inside us. Instead, He said pretty much…it will be okay, it will be fine because “…We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed” (2 Corinthians 4:8-9).

Don’t you love the level of endurance we have in Christ? Left to our own we’d be destroyed, crushed, and defeated. But instead, we have someone beyond us, above our troubles, greater than our pain…His grace, power, and might.

So, if you’re disgusted by your situation or your dilemma, I invite you to shed the feeling of helplessness and grab His promise that we would never, never, never be abandoned, in despair, or destroyed.
