The Book Marketing Network

For book/ebook authors, publishers, & self-publishers

In a previous blog, I noted that I had created two groups here at Book Marketing Network. I only wrote, however, about one of them: Poets and Angels. The second is called New Millennium Renaissance, and it is devoted to identifying the themes, subject matter, imagery, lexicons, ideologies, and voices that comprise modern literature. I invite you to join at this url: http://bookmarket.ning.com/group/newmillenniumrenaissance

The first topic of discussion is simple but significant: How do you define your literary identity at this time and how would you like for it to be described in the future?

The history of literature is filled with an abundance of cultural schools and movements. Most of them, like the Bloomsbury group of London, or the writers of the Harlem Renaissance, developed out some sense of shared artistic values or social and political concerns. Because they were recognized as the bearers of a unique and highly-respected talent––that being the ability to write exceptionally well––the perspectives presented in their novels, poems, essays, and extended works of nonfiction were esteemed to the point that they were often tagged collectively with identifying names. That realization brought to mind the following question:

By what name, or tag, might those in the future reading the works of this twenty-first century era come to describe serious writers of today? For that matter, what are some of the groups or movements by which we define ourselves? Post modernists? Neo post modernists? Integral litterateurs? Urban novelists? Poet seers? Internet scribblers?

Specific elements and concerns may vary but the wide range of publishing outlets now available––from traditional to self- to online––make it clear that we are indeed in the midst of a New Millennium Literary Renaissance. What may not be so clear is what we’re doing with it.
