Is your marriage happy? Do you see your wife or husband as your best friend and soul mate? Can you share what’s in your heart with confidence that what you say is heard and not judged? Can you disagree honestly and have a peaceful outcome?

God created us to love Him and to love each other. This means He wants us to have a relationship with Him and each other, and that means we need to communicate and understand what’s important to us all.

Communication is a vital key to a happy marriage. It’s important to really understand what the other person is saying. Don’t be afraid to say something like, “Let me see if I understand you” and then repeat what you think you heard. You see, it’s natural for us to think we understand what was said, and sometimes we really do, but it’s those other times I’m talking about here. You see, sometimes we assume we heard the other person correctly, but if we made a mistake and didn’t, then that can throw our relationship off track and even offend the speaker. Asking questions and really hearing the answers will help you avoid that, and it may even deepen your relationship.

We hope these words have encouraged you. You'll find more encouraging words like these in our emotional recovery workbook for Christians, which is appropriately called Encouraging Words for Life's Tough Times. To see a sample chapter, go to our site:

My husband and I are very close. Unfortunately it wasn't always that way. We've grown so much closer since we broke down and completely opened up to each other. Sometimes people assume that their loved one knows how the other one feels but that isn't always true. Ever since my husband and I had it out and spoke our minds, we've been each others best friend. I wouldn't change that for the world or the best seller's list for that matter.
