KEY LIME SQUEEZE

By Ronald W. Adams

Enspiren Press, 2008

Key Lime Squeeze, the second Joe Banks novel by Ronald W. Adams, has all of the necessary elements of an interesting read: good characterization, interesting (and well-described) settings, and authentic-sounding dialogue. It is a must-read for those looking for a different sort of detective story. In Buffalo detective Joe Banks, Adams has brought to life a devoted family man, loving husband and father, who also happens to be the sort of private investigator you want on your side, and don’t want to cross.

Key Lime Squeeze follows Banks as he tracks a runaway husband and insurance executive, Robert Boothby, all the way to Key West. But this is no ordinary midlife crisis victim, because he runs away with the money he helped his criminal in-laws, the Cantolinos, steal from his own company. Banks finds himself saddled with the family’s enforcer for a traveling companion who has his orders to take out both Banks and Boothby and return the stolen money to his boss. They soon discover they aren’t the only ones looking for Boothby, leading to a confrontation with Banks’ old mentor and police partner, who is looking not only to recover the stolen money, but also to blackmail the Cantolinos at the same time. The job becomes a game of cat and mouse with the Cantolino crime family, as well as with Brinkwater and his partner.

This is fast paced and enjoyable story. The characters are fabulous, as is the plot. I am impressed with the imagination, writing skills, and the author’s storytelling ability. The readers will truly love this new take on the traditional private eye genre. The characters are strong and completely enjoyable. Not only has Adams brought an Everyman quality to the hero, Banks, he has created a strong and believable counter in his wife, Paula, and his secretary, Sam Kelly. The readers can see themselves within each scene with these characters. Nicely accomplished.
