In the past I’ve gone through tough tests, painful trials and agonizing tragedy. And you’d think I’d be a pro at facing them, enduring them and move forward unscathed.

Nope. I still battle with subtle attacks. Recently we had an issue with one of my sons. The results and consequences could have been tragic and painful.

So, while God’s instructions to be anxious for nothing swirled in my head, I wiped my tears. And I did what seemed humanly impossible and illogical. Kind of like swimming against the current of my emotions---to praise the Lord and thank Him anyway. Gulp.

Though it didn’t feel right, while still in the difficult situation, I thanked Him for His goodness, His ability to overcome, His awareness of every detail and His divine power that transcended the circumstance. I thanked Him for it all.

You probably guessed the outcome. The situation with my son was resolved…and the results exceeded my expectations.

Phew! Sweating from the test, my words and thoughts of gratitude spilled effortlessly. Easy to say "thank you" when we see the results. But while still in the sticky situation, expressing gratitude is as odd as snow in Florida.

I wonder if you’re going through a tough time? And giving thanks seems insane?

"Be anxious for nothing," God says. "And in everything in prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, make your needs known to Him."

So when the mind is flooded with obstacles, obedience is the answer…give thanks. And when it doesn’t make sense? Give thanks again. "And God will give you the peace that goes beyond all understanding" (Philippians 4:4-7).

I’ve learned to thank Him for what He will do. "For I know the plans I have for you, says the Lord. Plans to prosper you, not to harm you. Plans to give you a hope and a future" (Jeremiah 29:11).

His plans for our lives are not bad at all. In fact, they’re the best, better than our own.

A ‘thank you’ note written with the pen of faith guarantees results that exceed all expectations.
