Why Would A READER Follow a Virtual Book Tour?

Have you ever asked yourself this very question?

I am going to take a moment to speak about virtual book tours from the reader's perspective, not teh author's. This is my experience

I love books, but even more I enjoy getting to know the authors. So often I read a book and I've never met the author and perhaps never will. And even if I meet any of my favorite authors, (the ones who are still alive), the chances are that I will not have the chance to have a conversation for more than a minute. I have met Mark Victor Hansen, and I know some things about him from my reading, but what you can discover during a virtual book tour can be much more personal than a brief encounter.

Some of the tour stops I have seen are purely promotional. Those are OK because they do let me decide if I'm curious about the book. The ones I enjoy more are the ones with excerpts. Reading an excerpt tells me whether I like the author's style and gives me an "appetizer."

Next in my order of enjoyment are the general interviews. Questions about how the author writes or plots, how long it took to write the book, marketing strategies and etc. are all interesting to me. maybe the average reader wouldn't care as much about the marketing side, but they wouldn't be going to a book marketing blog anyway.

Best of all are the interviews by someone who has actually read the book. Leaving the author side totally alone, as a reader it is interesting to delve deeper into the book than a mere blurb. This sort of interview tells me much more about the author's worldview. Knowing the author more is great.

Moving beyond the types of tour stops I have noticed, the touring authors are much more accessible than the "big fish" in the industry. You can ask a question and they'll most often answer. I am much more keen to read a book by someone I know, presuming I like their style and material.

So checking out n author's virtual book tour can tell you a lot about them the person and the work.

Why not check out the list of December's touring authors at Pump Up Your Book Promotion Virtual Book Tours. I guarantee you'll find more than one author's book that you're curious to investigate.

There is also a discussion thread about virtual book tours you right here on Book Marketing that you may wish to check out.
