As I thought about Christmas recently, I realized all those warm fuzzy feelings we experience at this very special time of year come from BEFORE the big day.

It’s the hustle and bustle, it’s the sweet Merry Christmases said to you by complete strangers. It’s the kindnesses such as letting someone out of their parking place or giving them the go-ahead as they try to merge into the traffic lane.

It’s the house filled with the fragrances of cookies and cider, and the joy of wrapping gifts for loved ones.

Then Christmas Day dawns. Gifts are unwrapped, sweaters tried on, toys played with, and our favorite foods are savored as our families and friends gather together. But all too quickly the day comes to a close as people travel home, piles of items to be returned are stacked in cars, and the crumbs of our meals are brushed off the table as we declare we’ll never eat another morsel of anything as long as we live.

It’s over. Finished. All those weeks of preparation are dim memories as our lives rapidly shift back to normal.

While Christmas may be over, I can still treasure those days leading up to Christmas because they were filled with a sense of wonder about what was to come.

Imagine the wonder in the minds of those who anticipated the birth of a Savior. The Shepherds, the wise men, the angels, Mary and Joseph.

Jesus came and fulfilled every Biblical promise and prophecy. And He stayed. He’s right here with us. “Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is Christ the Lord” (Luke 2:11).

We don’t have to lose the sense of anticipation when the tree comes down and the decorations are put away. Instead we can keep it alive in our hearts because Jesus isn’t just a once a year gift. He’s a lifetime gift of love, relationship, friendship, and salvation.

This year, my hope is that I will continue to anticipate the Greatest Gift of All not just for Christmas Day but for each new day – to look for Him in my life and to enjoy His presence daily.

Merry Christmas to each of you!

With love,

Jan’s friend, Cindi
