An excerpt from Lisabeth. I wasn't going to post this because it's about halfway through the book. But it keeps calling to me, asking to be posted...so here it is. One of my favorite scenes for a myriad of reasons. "She" is Lisabeth, of course. "He" is...well, you'll have to wait until the novel's published to know for sure :D

He spun, grateful for the continuing rumbles of thunder that distracted her, the flashes of lightening that pulled her eyes to the horizon. “You asked. Now you can run.”

“Who said I’m running?” she asked in surprise. “Is that why you told me? Trying to make me to run?”

“I ain’t ever told another soul,” he said. “I told ya because…”

“Because why?”

“I wanted you to understand why I did what I did. I didn’t want ya to always wonder. Do ya? Do ya understand?”

“Because you felt obligated after what happened to you?” She looked scared now, confused, “You felt you had to protect me?”

“Dammit Lissie,” he said, grabbing her shoulders to make her look up at him. “Can’t ya see?”

“Tell me.”

He held her gaze, now wishing he could find an escape. “I did it because…”

Silence fell, the unspoken words hanging in the electric air. The rumbles and claps of thunder didn’t phase the stillness of the moment. He couldn’t do it, he wanted to, but he couldn’t. The fear in her eyes cut him, and his own fear joined hers to build up an unbreakable barrier between them.

A loud crash and flash of light startled them both, drawing their eyes to the nearby lightening strike. The distraction served its purpose and Lisabeth pushed his hands from her shoulders. “I need to get back,” she whispered. “It will start raining any minute.”
