“I’m an atheist,” declared a close friend at a recent event that hubby and I attended in our hometown. He had just shared a situation which might potentially leave him unemployed.

“God has a plan for you,” I said.

He responded quickly that He did not believe in God, and added that man had created God, rather than God creating man.

I listened as he explained while blurting series of dates which he twisted to support his perception. And of course, the idea of evolution dotted his assertions.

I asked if evolution was indeed true, and if we “evolved” and eventually became a greater and greater “being” why is it we’re not physically getting better and better every day? And why are we all aging and, without exception, we all ultimately die?

No answer.

So I finally said, “bottom line, what happens when you die?”

“Nothing, that’s it,” he said.

Yikes! How's that for hope, for reassurance, and for confidence. To live your life only until you physically die is like preparing, planning, and plotting a vacation only to spend it in the airport. No one would do such a crazy thing. But those who live with the hope limited to the day you physically die believing that’s the end sadly live simmering in their own condemnation.

"I tell you the truth, whoever hears my word and believes him Who sent me has eternal life and will not be condemned; he has crossed over from death to life” (John 5:24).

Though my friend claims he might not need my prayers, still I pray for him. I still lift his soul for the hope of salvation. I still press forward to share the good news in the midst of bad news, distorted views, and darkened perceptions.

Facing rejection from an atheist should strengthen us rather than make us shrink back or retreat. Instead, we forge forth to sing of God’s presence, power and purpose.

How comforting it is that when we breathe our last breath, life, abundant, glorious, and eternal awaits us.
