For book/ebook authors, publishers, & self-publishers
Every once in awhile an invitation comes along that is hard to resist. I got one of those about a year ago, and it’s led to my taking part in a unique and fascinating writing project.
Most authors write alone, coming up with their plots, writing and polishing their stories, going back and forth with their editors. That’s what I mainly do. However, I was asked to participate in a “shared universe” Western series called Wolf Creek. It’s published by Western Fictioneers, under the house name Ford Fargo. In this series, a group of authors write segments of a novel from the viewpoint of each writer’s own character. There’s a series “Bible”, which describes the town, other characters, and the plots for each volume. All the chapters are tied together in each book to become one integrated story.
If this sounds complicated, it can be. Luckily in the case of Wolf Creek, the editing is strong, and egos have mainly been set aside so the changes from one chapter and character to the next can flow smoothly. And it’s been a whole lot of fun writing as a member of a team, where everyone has the chance to bounce ideas off each other, build off each others’ characters, stories, and work, and see everyone’s work meld together into one cohesive Western. And working with other writers can give you some ideas on how to improve your own work. The series still continues, and I will be part of it as long as it does. It’s been really different, and really satisfying.
